Maine coon?

In November we rescued a 2 year old male cat. Basically my friend was at the hairdressers talking about her cats, and a woman got talking to her and said that they had a very expensive pure breed cat but she was going to 'dump' it because it was a nightmare.

My friend took it, although couldn't keep it and I took him in.

My friend said she thought they'd said he was a rag doll cat. But I could tell he wasn't straight away, so just carried on and didn't think about it.

The cat is massive but is still growing, he's 2 but has grown loads since I got him in November.

He is long haired with a maine and a massive shaggy tail. He sleeps in the strangest positions, has lion like paws that look too big for his body and plays all the time (very gently and lovingly with the kitten)

I had a google to try and figure out how a 2 year old rescue was this big and still growing and read about maine coons, do you think he could be one? Is he going to end up huge? He's already a beast.

He's a gentle giant, bloody gorgeous and not at all a 'nightmare' like his last owners said. In fact when my son has seizures, the beast parks his lion arse next to him and refuses to move for the rest of the day

When I read about them it said they had blue eyes? He doesn't

Having blue eyes is a genetic side-effect of the 'pointed' (Siamese-like) coat pattern that most ragdolls have. If you can have ragdolls in solid colours, they would have yellow/green/gold eyes.

I think your gorgeous cat looks a bit too fluffy to be a Maine Coon (or at least a purebred one), they are supposed to only be semi-longhaired with a sort of shaggy look.

My thinking is if they thought he was a ragdoll then he would have been a something as they would have paid a lot more for him, but he strikes me as someone who was bought as a 'designer kitten' a bit like a handbag then they realised he was actually a living thing that was hard work and then neglected.

He used to have severe food issues, he'd eat until he threw up then eat his sick and he used to really try to eat anything even your dinner and stand strong when you tried to push him away, as if he didn't know when he'd get his next meal Hmm

Leaving biscuits down all the time soon cured him of that though, now he's quite happy that there's always food and only eats when he's hungry instead.

No, the blue eyes come with the points...solids have green or gold eyes usually.

Pictures on that site there if you scroll down far enough there's a black solid coloured mitted ragdoll. That's some mouthful to describe a black cat, lol.

Hurr1cane · 24/06/2014 22:40

Ah I see, maybe he is then? Do ragdoll cats grow till they're quite old as well then because he's definitely still growing, or could that be because he couldn't grow to his full size while he was neglected?

It hurts my hurt to think of the state of him when he came to us Hmm poor massive beast cat. He's such a perfect as well, I don't know how people can do that to them.

Poor wee thing :( at your last post.

I mean not now obviously, but when you got him.

tabulahrasa · 24/06/2014 22:43

Only it wasn't your last post...but you know what I mean.

They can keep growing up until they're about 4 and they're fairly big compared to most cats.

Hurr1cane · 25/06/2014 06:05

Thank you maybe it's that then Smile

I know what you mean. I always look at him and feel really sad about his past. The others weren't mis treated just given up, although that's bad enough for them

Remember, though, that cats pretty well live for The Now so any previous mistreatment will be becoming a fast-fading dream to him - you said that his eating was sorted now? Lots of love and he'll stay a happy cat.

Yeah it is, I just had to leave food down all the time and after a month of gorging till he was sick, he realised he would never be without food and now he's okish. He does get very over anxious if all the cats have emptied the bowl at night but he's ok as soon as he sees there's food there again.

He also used to howl blue murder if he was outside and the door was shut, it was a horrible noise, like he was really really sad. But now he knows he will be let in again he's stopped that and just waits for me to open the door and then leg it inside and go and check the food bowl just in case.poor lamb.

The total opposite of my oldest rescue cat who was morbidly obese and came with a set of instructions to only feed her fresh tuna and chicken breast Confused she gets high quality biscuits and wet cat food like the rest of them and eats them fine. Grin She's very highly strung though, I can tell she was really quite spoilt at her old house. If you are sat in such a way that she can't get onto your knee she shouts at you till you move.

One typical sign of a main coon is tufts of fur on the tips of their ears. Our Douglas is half maine coon (mum is pedigree and escaped one night!). He has small tufts on hs ear tips but some have massive ones.

Hurr1cane · 26/06/2014 16:10

He doesn't have tufts
