Can I afford to run 2 cats?

Ok so I absolutely adore our 1yr old cat and have been thinking about getting another one. We're on quite a tight budget whilst I'm between jobs but it does seem like a good time to go for it as I'll be at home more to help it settle in.

Realistically adding another cat to the mix - does it mean twice the price of running 1 cat? Ours is insured but I was hoping to adopt an older cat which I guess will be more expensive although hoping will be neutered and up to date with injections as we'd adopt from CP again.

So AIBU to consider another cat Smile

i have five cats and a week they cost me 1x6 pack butchers classic tins or asda fish in jelly, 1 eatra tin asdas fish in jelly £3 and two packs of feline fayre biscuits on offer at asda £2 per bag so total of £7 a week, where they become expensive is every 3 months 5 x milbemax worm tablets at £3.50 each , i buy the big spray bottle of frontline which is £30 but lasts a whole year, i have a bank account for vets fees other than worm and flea stuff as insuring 5 cats would be too much and over the years i have been lucky in that i have put more in than taken out

I think it depends just how tight your budget really is, its - and have you another job definitely coming down the line? For me it would be a 'couldn't resist' - if Seniorboy would ever allow it - but I have a little bit of slack. Do you?

Thanks Smile that's all food for thought!

Yes is things like the flea/worm stuff that puts me off as ours has Advocate from vets which is £21 for 3 month supply Shock I do really want to expand our cat empire Grin but don't want to put too much strain on our finances.. decisions, decisions!!

Also unsure of how my tortie girl would cope with a companion - they are not famous for their tolerance of other cats/humans/life forms in general are they? Grin

If you're maybe going to be home for a bit, have you thought about fostering, its ? I think there's a great need and (I understand) most/all rescues will meet the vet and med bills for the cats.

Now that's an idea cozie! I wonder if I could give them up again though Grin

I might try our local CP branch as my DS wants to do some fundraising for them in any case..

issey and TCN both foster so maybe they'll see this thread and comment.

Good luck whatever you decide.

Whatever you decide wouldn't it be cheaper to buy the advocate off an online pharmacy with a private prescription off the vet?

I think ours worked out at £4 a month because I used topcashback for it too.

fostering is great depending on your experience most fosterers do moms and kittens which are great i do just foster orphan kittens as house is full enough , you do fall in love with them they are cute, but if you go into it with the mindset that they are on holiday at your house till they are big enough to go back to the rescue it is very rewarding if you have any questions about fostering feel free to PM me
