Elderly cat

My cat is at least 16 and starting to look old and thin. He eats well, I give him regular whiskas pouches and complete biscuits that he has access to all the time but he's still looking increasingly thin.
I'm going to try some richer 'old cat' food. Has anyone got any recommendation?

They can get thinner as they age - and probably less active as well - but has he been to the vet recently for a checkup and eg to have his teeth looked at ? (In case his thinness is for a reason.)

My own old boy is 19 and had to have his teeth overhauled at 16 due to dental decay - and many otherwise healthy senior cats can get age-related ailments such as that and arthritis which can put them off their food a bit. No point in buying a better quality food than Whiskas if he's not going to eat it.

Good idea to get him checked by the vet.

There's quite a few senior ranges of cat food you could try.

Thyroid problems are very common in older cats and can cause weight loss. I think he needs an elderly check up, so that the vet can run some bloods and see how he is generally. I do this every 6 months with older pets anyway.

I will take him to the vet. It has been a while, thank you.
He used to be a bit 'feisty' at the vets Grin he may have mellowed a bit in his old age.

Just for fun :)

Nice old boy. Smile

Unless he's feisty with those as well, I'd see (if you don't already do it) if you could maybe give him a hand with his grooming and his claws. I know that Seniorboy is a bit stiff to do the sort of grooming he would have done a few years back and he hasn't really got the leg strength now to keep his front claws down. (Or the teeth to do his back claws!)

He really likes the attention of the grooming as well because I do it as part of his evening love fest. (If I'm late with it, he actually comes and moans at me to remind me.Smile) It cheers him up no end - which is always good for an older boy.
