I'm really concerned about my female as she has started to look quite thin & I'm not sure of the best way to bulk her up without making her ill .
She's a Maine Coon around 2-3 years old (abandoned so not quite sure) .
She has 2 pouches a day & constant access to biscuits & she has been having pilchards/sardines but only half a small tin of each at a time , 2 small tons last a week .

She is booked in too be neutered a week on Wednesday .
Is their anything else I can give her ?

Kitten food. But you might want to consult a vet.

RubbishMantra · 21/06/2014 04:20

Agree with the kitten food, a good quality one. I feed my kitten Royal Canin kitten, and grown-up cat is stealing it and is looking rather portly after only a couple of weeks.

When did you last worm her? Worms cause weight loss.

cozietoesie · 21/06/2014 07:05

I'd vet check her, Nanaa, although presumably she'll be given the once over during neutering (with bloods, urine test etc if not already done recently) and the vet will advise.

(That's a late neutering - do you know if she had litters before she came to you?)

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/06/2014 07:36

Neutering itself will help as energy requirements drop 10% after neutering, also cats also tend to stay home more after neutering. Kitten food is also the best option to put weight on, though I do find young Maine Coons do go through a rangy stage.

NanaaBananaaaZ · 21/06/2014 08:25

Yeah she has had a litter , she was pregnant when I got her hence he late neutering , she will be getting a full health check before she gets neutered .

I'll get her some kitten food today , she was wormed two weeks ago

She's not fully matured yet so she might be going through a growth spurt.

What brand of food do you use? If its one with lots of cereal a switch to a higher meat content might help.

I'd second getting the vet to check her out. Our cat got very skinny (but because it happened gradually we weren't aware how much weight he'd lost till he'd lost a lot) and it turned out to be an inflammatory gut condition that stopped him absorbing nutrients properly. Regular steroids have got him back up to his fighting weight and he's a much happier boy. Hopefully your girl has nothing medical wrong, but weight loss is always a red flag I think, so best get her checked over.

NanaaBananaaaZ · 21/06/2014 09:03

I can't get her to the vets until her appointment for neutering unfortunately .

She is on Felix food as that's the only one that seems to agree with her

Well she's due at the vet practice in 10 days or so so a check up then will be good. Kitten food in the meantime might be worth a try.

Good luck - and let us know how she gets on.

Yes to the vets checkup. when put cat lost weight he had a thyroid problem. 2 tablets a day keep him happy and healthy.

NanaaBananaaaZ · 21/06/2014 10:34

Thanks everybody

She may need worming. That made my girl very skinny, and it's taken her a while to get to healthy thin rather than unwell thin.

SecretNutellaFix · 21/06/2014 11:33

Sorry, missed your post.

ameliaesmith · 15/01/2019 22:54

apologies for digging up an old thread (feel like I'm always doing this every time I come on here!)...but my cats appetite has shrunk in half over the last few weeks and the weight is dropping off him fast. I saw someone mentioned using kitten food on here and I've read in other places like this blog www.tuxedo-cat.co.uk/how-to-fatten-up-a-cat/ that kitten food works for fattening up a cat. Is it safe?

TIA Ameila

Ollivander84 · 15/01/2019 22:57

@ameliaesmith vet first but yes kitten food is calorie heavy in small portions

Fluffycloudland77 · 16/01/2019 06:54

I’d get him in the vets ASAP, no ones appetite and weight drop off for no reason.
