I'd like some advice on where to get a kitten please. Our last was a lucky find, mum was a stray, but I've never actually bought a cat. Gumtree looks a bit dubious to say the least, I don't want to perpetuate senseless breeding, but where is best? I'm ne london

Try CHAT, embedded. (And if no immediate joy from them, come back here. TCN is a CHAT volunteer so knows whereof she speaks.)

Cats Protection will find you an indoor cat.

You could also consider fostering, foster cats are not allowed out.

Thanks everyone, it's now a moot point! I've been talking about it for a while and in the same day I've had a family (who speak limited english!) knock on the door with a kitten in a box and a teacher from school offer one who's coming tomorrow.

Couldn't quite work out how the family knew, someone had told them but their english was poor. Said they had to move and could only keep mum, but struggled to understand my questions. He's about twelve weeks and clearly pampered, no nerves at all. Straight on my lap, doesn't flinch at the kids and very healthy looking. They had a two yr old with them so that explains it I guess.

oh, and he only eats tinned tuna!

Hah! You'll have to wean him off that as soon as. (Bad for him to live on food which isn't nutritionally balanced - and I do hope he's at least eating the stuff in spring water and not the stuff in brine or oil.)

Glad you've got your cat, though. I suspect you'll be back to this board regularly now?

(What is to happen with the teacher's one? Have you cancelled that?)

embeddedclaws · 26/05/2014 21:44

I'm taking both so they're not lonely. If they hate each other the teacher's one can be returned.

I'm thinking weaning him by slowly adding other foods.

Embedded do you by any chance have contact details for the people who don't speak English? We (CHAT) would like to see if we can help them with neutering the mum. We have access to people who speak most languages. Please pm me if you can help.

embeddedclaws · 26/05/2014 22:43

no, sorry I know the house by sight only. I get the impression they will, they seemed to really care but of the old belief of 'just one litter'.

though can I neuter with CHAT?

Yes anyone can neuter with CHAT, although it would be better if people not on low incomes used private vets as of course our resources of vet time and theatre space are finite. We charge £25 for females and £20 for males.
