Our cat has alwas been a bit odd. We were her 3rd home and she'd not had a great time at te other two. We've had her 9 years and she's had her far share of complaints:
Flu (previous owner didn't innoulate and lied)
Heart murmer
Manky black gunk in ears
Diabetes - which was v mild - evidenced by the way she kept having hypoglycemic attacks after having insulin injected.

The diabetes magically cleared up, but she's now got a penchent for weeing by the telly;occasionally varied by pooing behind it too. We've tried sprays, obstacles etc., but are still regularly confronted by a powerful smell of wee when we come down/in. Christmas day was particularly bad, when the kids' new pjs were stikning of cat wee before we realised she'd weed near the presents.

We have another cat, but they've lived togther for 8 years.

Short of a shovel, what can we do?

Do you have a litter tray?

Sightoabloodyscream · 02/02/2014 18:13

Yes.

Ok then, are you removing clumps of waste regularly? Sometimes they are fussy about the litter. Mine likes ultra clumping talc scented or he wees up the wall.

Other triggers here are over scented cleaning products to clean the tray ie disinfectants, incorrect depth of litter Hmm & only having one tray (because who wants to walk all the way downstairs eh?).

I'd be looking for a way to confine her to one area at night and when I'm out with a tray/food/ water.

She might be stressed by living with another cat even though they've co-existed for years, or there might be a rogue bully cat coming in through the cat flap & worrying her which a microchip recognising cat flap would sort out.

I do sympathise, it's hard to like a cat who's just liberally sprayed but shouting etc makes them more stressed & doesn't help in the long run.

They're confined to the living room/ kitchen at night - which is where she wees. No cat flap; although I really wish we'd trained them to use one.

She does get fussy over her litter tray, although dh is good at cleaning is regularly. We've even changed her food cos dry stuff makes her wee more!

Could you confine them to just one room or are you open plan?.

I wonder if there is something about her tray she dislikes? Ours has got incredibly fussy about litter.

I don't think a flaps the answer if you don't have one, they can't go out overnight anyway due to cars & that's her problem time.

It's open plan. Thing is, she does wee in the tray. We've only actually caught her weeing on the floor once (well, dd did: "Cat wee; cat wee!"), but the wet patches tell their own tale.

You can get uv lights on eBay/amazon too which apparently highlight urine so you can clean it all up.

Try another two trays, preferably in a secluded area & see if it helps. They don't cost much in supermarkets.

Give ultra clumping litter a try too, rough litter can be hard on paws.

If you have carpet in any of the areas which have been weed on, you'll need to give it a really thorough clean - biological washing powder or liquid is good for this, I also use dilute white vinegar to get rid of the wee smell. Unfortunately when this happened in my house (very elderly female cat started weeing on 1 or 2 patches of carpet) we had to cut away the underlay & throw it out because no matter how much we cleaned the carpet we couldn't get the smell out of the underlay.

Hard floors are easier to clean but again use something like bio washing powder, bleach/disinfectant etc will only make it more likely that the cat will return to that spot.

Also maybe a visit to the vet, especially if she may have had some worsening of diabetes (diabetes can make them wee more & may not have enough time to get to litter tray)

We also got a Feliway plugin for the area where our cat was weeing, I think it did help a little bit but thorough cleaning was the most helpful thing
