I have to get rid of my cat :(

So it turns out that my DS is allergic Hmm we have had our suspicions but have had it confirmed and with his asthma as well we have been told we have no choice to give up our cat. Obviously DS comes first but it's still sad.

So does anyone know how to rehome a very friendly, excellent with kids male tabby? He's only 3 and has all his jabs but I don't want to just hand him over to a shelter or anything. I want to know he will be loved and looked after.
Does anyone have any suggestions on where to start ? I'm in North Wiltshire if that makes any difference

It would do no harm to put a post on one of the \link{http://www.catchat.org/\catchat} forums seeking a home. They also have a page which shows all the shelters near to people (see 'Find a Shelter) and you may be able to find a smaller rescue which will help out.

Best of luck.

PS - I'm assuming that you're already planning to circulate his details to friends/colleagues and neighbours etc. (I'd make up a little page with his photo on and print a few off.) Might also be worth seeing if your vet can help out as well - they sometimes allow ads in the practice for cats who need a home.

In the mean time could you use petal wipes to reduce the allergens? Did the dr give him a volumiser? I think it helps a lot.

Dh didn't need two inhalers before we had the cat Blush

Ask around family, friends and colleagues if they know anyone looking for a cat. If that doesn't work try local animal rehoming charities. the fact that yous cat is friendly with children, housetrained (I assume), friendly and has all his jabs makes him very desirable.
Please do not give him away for free on gumtree or other small ads site as i have heard rumors of people involved in dogfighting picking up free cats and kittens to "blood" the dogs, I don't know if it's an urban myth but don't take the risk.

Qazac - I would never put him on gumtree or anything like that. I would be too terrified of him being mistreated. He is so bloody lovely it's going to be heartbreaking seeing him go so I want to know he will be well looked after.

When we had to get rid of our cat years ago DH asked around at work and a colleague he knew well took her. He gave DH regular updates over the years and when she died of old age (peacefully at the vets overnight) he told him and reiterated what a wonderful cat she had been and how grateful he was that we had given him to her.

It really helped us to know she went to a good home and was being loved.

Is there anyone you know who wants a cat? If you know someone and can check in with them as to how he is, you might feel better than giving him to a stranger.

Good luck, it is really horrible to have to give up a loved pet.Sad
