my cat is hell bent on staging dirty protests at the new arrival

we got a new pup in october....i have 7 yr old cats and another older dog of 9.

the cats do not like the new pup even though he tries to be friendly - he is so much bigger than them and the other dog and they hiss and scratch if he tries to get near them.
consequently i have let them upstairs much more to avoid them getting stressed.
a few weeks ago one of them climbed on to my bed at 5am....nothing unusual there....but she bloody peed on me! i had to change all the bedding and duvet!

today my son came home from work and found the same cat had apparently done a crap on his bed....we changed it to find she had also peed and soaked the duvet, mattress protector and mattress.

how can i stop the dirty protests!?

their litter tray was clean and at the foot of the stairs along with a bowl of water.
their food is high on the kitchen top.
the new pup is not aggressive toward them in any way - but they are to him.

i dont want to stop the cats from being upstairs as they are clearly not happy with the new arrival and want peace and quiet....but if they carry on ruining bedding and mattresses im going to have to stop them from being upstairs.

they are free to go out but tend to choose to stay in especially in the cold weather - hence the litter tray for them.

Put a litter tray upstairs too. Cats can be quite funny about where they toilet. If their litter tray is downstairs whete the puppy they don't like is they are unlikely to use it.
I was always taught general rule of thumb is one tray per cat plus a spare.

I agree you have allowed upstairs to become the cats place, but left the litter tray downstairs. I find putting it in the bath limits the mess.

ive gone an got another litter tray and put that one on the landing. The downstairs tray is shut away in the hall where the dog(s) cant get to it, and the cats know the hall way is a "safe" place and usually do use the tray there so i dont know why one of them chose not to use it yesterday.

there are now 2 trays, one up and one down. hope that works! thanks for the advice

I'm afraid that what you know and what the cats know aren't necessarily the same thing. Wink They may have decided, for reasons best known to themselves, that upstairs is the only safe place. Who can truly read the mind of a cat?

The extra tray is worth a try anyway. Best of luck and let us know how you get on.
