Have read through some of the threads, but wanted to post mine as not sure if anyone will think the two are combined in my case. HHave new 6mth old cat for two weeks at home now (yet to go out) and he is currently being fed on Hills dry (measured amount throughout the day)and a pouch of wet each morning - both Kitten types. My questions are:

  1. He is poo-ing three to five times a day at the mo, and has extremeley smelly poo and wee, I am scooping as soon as I smell it, and having to change the litter at least every 3 days - Is this normal? What litter is best to use? I use Felifresh at the mo and am now using a covered litter tray
  2. Should I just dry feed him, he has water down 24/7 although has taken to drinking out of DD's bedside water even when he has plenty himself! Will this help his poos? Or are they not related?

Due for flea treatment tomorrow, then letting him out into the big wide world! No cat flap so hoping he will go out for the evenings each day/during the day at wkends when home.

Hope I am doing this right?!!Blush

hi sounds like hes gettin the right amount of food at 6 months he could have adult food might make his poo smell a bit less as kitten food is higher protein than adult look for a good tinned food such as butchers classic high meat no cereal or appleaws is good, and something like purely from pets at home or james wellbeloved for dry hills isnt as good as the vets make out it is litter i use the wood pellets one from asda as it breaks down to sawdust and being wood beased smells nicer in the tray is he neutered because whole tom cat wee smells stronger than neutered if hes not then get him neutered, and at only 6 months please dont let him out all night as he will be vunerable to being run over as he wont have any road sense, attack by foxes as they are a lot bigger than him, and to people who go round looking for cats out at night for dog fight bait

Thanks! Will look into those foods.
Am going to be letting him in whenever he likes of course but definately by the time I go to bed, so he's just out for the evening? Is this wrong then?

Is he neutered?

cls77 · 15/01/2014 18:52

Yes he was neutered two weeks ago

I'd keep him in after dusk, myself. The prey animals don't usually come out until late but the risks from cars go up hugely as light levels go down. Luckily, it's pretty boring and cold out there at this time of year, especially after dusk, so he shouldn't mind too much.

Fluffycloudland77 · 15/01/2014 19:15

Ok good, well I'd let him out hungry, tap his dish with a fork when you feed him so he associates the noise with food.

I wouldn't let him out after dark though, they are at risk of being run over in the dark. Luckily it's getting lighter all the time.

Saturday mornings a good time to start so you can nervously watch as he climbs over the fence and disappears for a few hours.

cls77 · 15/01/2014 19:35

That's a good idea yes Saturday morning I'm home, but what do I do if I'm going out 1-11 at night? What if he doesn't come back before I go out?

Can you install a cat flap? (I see you don't have one at the moment.) If you got a decent one (preferably a microchip one) you could set it for entrance only if you wanted so that once in he had to stay.

cls77 · 15/01/2014 19:42

Don't know whether I could install one? I rent and although I've got written permission to have the cat I don't think they'd allow me to cut a piece out of their door?!
