cheesycat has a cat flap and gets locked in when dark. I haven't changed the litter tray for ages, I cannot actually remember when was the last time.
time to ditch it? how often do they crap/wee?

On the carpet - and basically soon as you remove it! I'd leave it for a good while yet, certainly until all prospect of snow has come and gone.

My cat rarely uses his tray (he is in at night). He always has a tray to use as I would rather he did that than me come down in the morning to be greeted by a crap / wee on my floor.

My cat has a litter tray for "emergencies only". At the moment his emergency happens just before I come downstairs in the morning and it's never wee. Hmm

Never remove a tray if your cat is locked in. They need to go when they need to go and not having anywhere to go will cause stress and they will resort to weeing/shitting on the floor if necessary.

she has crapped in the bath tub a few times... despite having the tray. but not for a while.
I guess i should keep it.

It will give you a better night's sleep, paneer. You won't be lying awake 'wondering' in the same way.

(And yes - if she's kept in overnight, she'll need a tray. She might be caught short (it's a long time to cross your legs) and you don't need that first thing in the morning.)
