My beloved little boy cat died today :(

He was 11 years old, the vet said that he had been poisoned by antifreeze Hmm

He came in this morning after a night on the tiles with his brother and promptly went to sleep (normal). However, he started vomiting on the sofa. I feel awful now but I lifted him out on to the patio while he was being sick and his back legs just gave way underneath him. He stumbled back in to the house completely disoriented and collapsed at my feet.
He then struggled out of the living room and went to sleep on our bed.
Each time I went to check on him he didn't flinch. I had to physically touch him to get a lame mew.
This is a cat who is afraid of his own shadow and stayed on the bed while strangers were viewing our house and traipsing through the bedroom.
I took him straight to the vet, and as he could find no obvious sign of injury he suspected poisoning.
I got a call later today to say that he had passed away and there was antifreeze in his system. My poor tiny little boy cat.

I can't help but get upset thinking about his brother that he's left - they were worst enemies but best of friends.

He also loved 9 month old DS regardless of the tail pulling and fur grabbing.

Sorry for such a depressing post.

Poor poor you.
Don't know what else to say
Take care.

timtam23 · 04/01/2014 23:11

Oh that's so sad. I'm so very sorry, you must all be devastated Thanks

HomeIsWhereTheGinIs · 04/01/2014 23:11

I just wanted to say that I'm so sorry for you. The joy that we get from our feline family is tempered by the grief when they go ahead somewhere we can't follow. I'm sure that he had a very happy life and knew he was loved.

cozietoesie · 04/01/2014 23:11

I'm so sorry, If. How is his brother physically?

myrtleWilson · 04/01/2014 23:12

Oh no, love to you all

FamiliesShareGerms · 04/01/2014 23:15

That's awful, poor him and poor you. And poor left behind cat - how is he taking it?

Thank you all x

His brother seems to be fine. I was concerned and did mention it to the vet that the pair of them go out and about together and he may have drank from the same puddle. I think he's been lucky.
Unless the little un took in the poison on an earlier trip out alone and the effects have only just shown today.

His brother is going to miss him Hmm

I'm so sorry, poor little boy cat. It's terribly sad when our furry friends leave us. How is his brother?

Queenofknickers · 04/01/2014 23:24

I'm so so sorry - sending love to you xxxxThanksThanks

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/01/2014 09:35

What a horrible thing to happen, you weren't to know it was antifreeze poisening though.

I'd keep his brother in at night from now on though.

FeelingTheFire · 05/01/2014 11:37

So sorry. But yes, keep his brother in from now on to be on the safe side.

BananaNotPeelingWell · 05/01/2014 11:45

Sad How dreadful..I'm so very sorry. Poor little cat. I worry a lot about this. Why the hell cant AF be made to taste nasty to animals? It's astonishing that it isn't the lawAngry

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 05/01/2014 11:56

I agree Banana. The vet told me that AF was very tasty to cats so they're actually drawn to it, and once they've consumed even a tiny bit there's practically no chance of survival :(

I felt slightly comforted by the fact that he could have just licked a tiny spillage on someone's driveway, rather than someone intentionally poisoning him - which was my initial thought.

Luckily, his brother prefers home comforts so shouldn't be too much trouble keeping him indoors. The little one was the explorer.

We're moving house (out the area) in a few days so it might be the ideal time to encourage him to be a house/garden cat.

There's an ongoing campaign to ban the use of ethylene glycol in antifreeze unless a bitterant is added. I don't know how it's going though.

PipkinsPal · 05/01/2014 12:03

I'm so sorry. Thanks I have a boy whose brother was knocked down and killed at the end of November. It's awfully sad watching him wandering around looking for friends. Give your other cat lots of cuddles and love.

lookatmybutt · 05/01/2014 12:05

I'm so sorry :(

At least it wasn't deliberate. I have heard a couple of people lose cats this year already due to antifreeze poisoning - it was somewhere in Wales and their vet said it was deliberate in that case.

DidoTheDodo · 05/01/2014 12:11

I m so very sorry to hear this. It just seems so awful that your poor little boy died through the carelessness of someone not clearing up properly.
I really hope they put something in antifreeze to reduce the chances of your sad story being repeated.

Fluffycloudland77 · 05/01/2014 12:36

Some people put it in water features/fountains to stop them freezing over.

TheBunsOfPanettone · 05/01/2014 13:24

IfatFirst

That's heart-breaking; poor little chap. Condolences to you and your family Thanks I'd second what another poster said about keeping your other boy in at night from now on.

IfAtFirstUDontSucceed · 05/01/2014 13:53

Some people put it in water features/fountains to stop them freezing over.

That's most probably it! He was always drinking water out of anywhere but his lovely clean water bowls at home!

I'm so sorry love. I can't imagine the pain you are in.

I live in fear of this happening to one of mine. Thanks for you and your other wee boy.

TheBunsOfPanettone · 05/01/2014 14:55

I've found this site on the anti-freeze campaign and will also start a thread with it in the title for more visibility. There is a link to their Facebook page, suggested wording for letters to MP, news on safer anti-freeze development etc.etc. The RIP page is heart-breaking.
