Cat seizures

Darcy cat is nearly 20, no underlying health issues etc. Came down Mon morning to find her slumped in corner, dribbling and having evacuated bowels. Got her straight into vets who thought seizure. She had perked up in the hour it took for vets to open, us to get there etc and was much more her normal self. Vet did a blood test as general MOT. Went home and she slept heavily all Mon but did get up to drink/eat/pad about and went outside to toilet (she won't use a tray).

Yesterday she was still subdued but a quieter version of herself. Vet got results back and all normal, organs ok, white/red blood normal, blood sugar normal etc. We checked on her at midnight and have her a treat to wish her happy new year.

Came down this morning and she showed same symptoms as before. Vet had said as way forward to monitor and see if she had another seizure then would look at frequency etc. Spoke to out of hours who said monitor her. She had another seizure this afternoon, actually saw this one.

She is now completely zonked out on sofa. Has hardly moved all day, drunk some water when bowl held to her but won't eat her food or any treats. She is stretched out and just sleeping but looks drugged. She is now putting her head up if DH and I approach but rest of day hasn't been doing this, and has not purred all day.

We will be back in touch with vets in morning to find out next steps. Just wondered if anyone had been through this or had any advice. Might need hand holding too, she has been our family's pet since I was a teenager and now lives with me and DH. Is there anything I can do for her this evening? Kept temp of lounge up and had fire on for her.

I may sound harsh here but as the owner of two 15 year old cats I would argue that taking them to and from the vet and having tests etc (not to mention the money!) is subjecting them to undue stress. What are you expecting? They are very old and no-one can live forever. just make your cat comfortable and make their life as happy as you can is my advice, and that is what I am doing with my increasingly frail cats.

I agree with you-have been down the road of vets and tests before with other pets and DH and I have agreed not to do this here.

However, Mon we didn't know what was wrong and wanted to get her checked, also to ensure that she wasn't in pain and to see if there was anything we could do. Blood test was to make sure that she wasn't suffering something nasty.

I want to speak to vet tomorrow (not necessarily to take her in) to find out if there is anything we can do for her, and if not, how long we let her continue before intervening.

I am not expecting anything but actually I would rather talk to a professional and consider all the options.

Sounds as if the vet has probably ruled out most of the likely causes for a cat of her age so you may have a hard decision to make tomorrow. I would be keeping things warm and quiet for her tonight - and likely sleeping on the sofa with her for the rest of the night. Maybe putting towels or something underneath her so that you can quickly clean up if she has another accident.

Thankyou cozietoesie. She is stretched out on sofa as she has been all day (will put a photo on profile if anyone wants to see her). She is warm and comfy, just not with it if you see what I mean. Good thinking about the towels, will do that. Do I keep offering her water? Will she be in pain? She doesn't seem it but no purrs. And yes, likely to be me and DH down here tonight.

Her being stretched out and calm doesn't sound as if she's in pain or currently distressed. You could have water put close by in case she wants some but I doubt she will at this stage.

Made it through the night but no change, waiting for vets to phone us back now.

Let us know how she gets on.

Just back from vets. Darcy cat was PTS, not fair to keep her going. DH and I were with her, pretty instant passing. Lots of tears from us but we did the right thing for her. Having her cremated at vets and ashes back to scatter with flower seeds. Hand holding appreciated!

So sorry, Gigi. It sounds as if she'd just come to the end of a long life and you did the kind and most loving thing. Still such a difficult decision, though.
