Mr Cory the fat tabby is getting very thin... any thoughts?

I have been noticing it but thought I was imagining it - he has shed a lot of fur (I can tell from the hoover) and is losing weight all over, but eating normally.

Could it be age? I think he's 10, but he's an FIV rescue and could be much older.

He's not too thin - normal sized now. Was a bit super-cuddly, to be fair.

Worms?

Is he eating normally? My 17yo is very thin but didn't start going that way until maybe 3 years ago. He was fairly normal sized at 10.

as hes an older cat losing wheight is a sign of hyperthyroidism and also diabetes might be worth a trip to the vets and get a blood test to rule out either or confirm if it is one of these

Vet, Corygal. I'd have any unexplained and significant loss of weight to the vet directly.

Corygal · 28/12/2013 21:41

Thanks all. Could it be benign? I am worried but he seems full of perk.

Also are there any other reduced price vet services in London apart from Blue Cross? I am pathetically skint at the mo.

How about pdsa? Vet treatment always comes at the worst time.

I think it's probably worth asking the vet to do a geratric blood panel, checking kidneys, thyroid etc. Quite a few old cat type afflictions can be treated successfully for quite some time but better to know what you're dealing with so you can treat accordingly.

ThenAgain · 28/12/2013 21:52

Sorry, just saw what you said about cost, I know that's a difficult consideration.

Our cat lost weight and was diagnosed with a thyroid problem. He had a few expensive blood tests, and it's now managed by taking 2 tablets a day. They cost £30 for just over a months supply.

sweetkitty · 28/12/2013 21:53

Happened to one of mine it was his thyroid, he was on tablets then had an op to remove his thyroid.

NiSaBula · 28/12/2013 22:05

My mums cat has an overactive thyroid, (so do I funnily). He lost loads of weight but was constantly pestering for food. She gets his prescription from the vet, then buys the tablets from animed online. This website was recommended by the vet and costs around 45 pounds for 3 months, rather than 30 pounds per month to buy the tablets from the vet.

Just get him vetted. Mr Cory is a known cat on this board and I reckon he'll be seen right,

cozietoesie · 29/12/2013 00:13

PS - but cry a lot at the vet, No sense in contributing to any profit. (Sorry, Lone.)

It could well be worms - my 14 year old cat got thin, the vet gave her a worming pill and she is now nicely podgy again. I'd been using Bob Martin worming granules and they weren't keeping her clear.

TalkinPeace · 02/01/2014 18:48

old cat was thyroid ....
if it is, get the vet to write you a prescription and then get the pills from somewhere like Pet Drugs Online - 1/4 the price of a vet
old cat was never operated on ... too risky for him
happy 4 years
