Do all male cats stink, or just this one?

I have a new foster cat, my first boy. He's adorable, but whatever room he spends time in starts to smell musky. I've never had this with any of the female cats, in fact none of them ever smelled of anything to me. But this boy reeks! Is it normal, or something to bring up at his next check up?

(He's also long haired, I don't know if that makes a difference?)

Unneutered boys stink. Neutered ones don't. Perhaps his castration missed a bit? (to use the technical term :) )

ShinyBauble · 19/12/2013 14:57

Oh, maybe? He's only a year old. I assume he is neutered, he probably is, but I'll check.

He's so gorgeous, and affectionate, but he likes to sit as close to my face as possible and I find myself holding my breath sometimes!

(Sorry, just realised I posted this thread twice, I'll ask for the other to be deleted.)

How can you not know? Where did he come from?

cozietoesie · 19/12/2013 15:24

Are you sure it's a musk smell? If he's seriously reeking of something unpleasant, I'm wondering, for example, whether he could have an anal gland problem. I'd definitely raise it at the next vet check up.

Good point Cozie

ShinyBauble · 19/12/2013 15:42

He was a stray, who got picked up after a cat hit him and broke his jaw. When the vets had finished treating him they passed him on to Cats Protection. I assume they would have checked if he was neutered while he was there?

(He seems fine physically by the way, he was with another fosterer for two months and he's a very playful and happy cat.)

*After a car hit him, not a cat.

Yes, I can't imagine CPL homing an unneutered cat. Sometimes a bit of the testicle is accidentally left behind though, so it might be that. Or the anal gland thing as Cozie suggested.

I'd get him to the vet to have him checked as it's certainly not normal.

His he tabby? I've had a fair few cats in my time (always neutured), and only the tabby boys have had B.O. It's weird, or maybe I just have weird cats ;-)

thecatneuterer · 19/12/2013 16:20

growltiger - you have weird cats :) I've had more tabby boys than I can count. Not one has smelled anything other than delightful.

ShinyBauble · 19/12/2013 16:33

No, he's black and white. He's seeing the vet for a check up after Christmas so I'll mention it then
