ffs - just found a cat dumped on my doorstep

I just want to vent really.

Just went outside to the bin, and there was a cat carrier, with a cat inside, and a note. The note, asking me to look after the cat (with no explanation), is from a man who until a couple of weeks ago lived a few doors down.

I already have his other cat as he decided to come and live with me about 4 years ago - mainly I think because the man refused to get a cat flap, and that is a cat that likes his autonomy, and partly because he (the cat) fell in love with my Stacey (another cat of course), thus putting Bradley's nose out of joint, and causing a bit of a feline love triangle, but that's another story.

The man and his wife have a toddler, and a new baby, and about 4 months ago bought a staffie puppy. So I'm guessing all this, plus the house move, have contributed to this. I could also be related to the fact that the man seems to have developed paranoid schizophrenia (either that or the world really is going to end on 14 January, MI5 really are monitoring him, aliens really are sending him messages via youtube and pigeons really are following him around telling him what to do). So even though I have his phone number I've no intention of calling him.

So it looks as though I have another cat, on top of my 19 full-timers, plus another six I'm having to foster until a cruelty case is resolved, plus a local stray with a fractured hip that's on cage rest in my bathroom .... Hell's bells, it's all getting a bit much.

I might as well keep this cat though rather than trying to rehome him through Celia's. No only is there of course no room at all at Celia's, but also this cat will at least be back on home territory and so should settle in reasonably quickly (although I've yet to find out how he's likely to feel about living in such a multi-cat household).

No advice sought - just a bit of tea and sympathy ...

Ouch, TCN. Will you be able to cope?

thecatneuterer · 15/12/2013 14:48

Cozie, I always say that one more makes very little difference. But in the last three weeks this makes an extra 8 (atlhough 7 will eventually go again), and yes I am noticing the difference. I'm sure I'll cope though. And I still think that even 30 cats are less work than say one baby - and people seem to cope with those.

big hugs catneuterer the problem is if people know you are involved in cat rescue they know you wont say no at yorkshire cat rescue this week we have one very lucky kitten she was dumped in a cardboard box at the top of our drive which is on a main road, the box had blown into the road and shher coincidence one of our supporters was driving by and pulled the box with 8 week old kitten out of the path of a bloody great big lorry, must have just been intuition that she stopped her car or the poor kitten would have been dead there was a note in the box saying the owners were been evicted why get a kitten then, and why not come even part way down the drive

cozietoesie · 15/12/2013 17:39

Is she warm and fed now, issey?

YourHandInMyHand · 15/12/2013 17:52

How big is your house??? That is a LOT of cats to have in one house. I don't come into this topic that often so am not familiar with your situation - are you a fosterer for a rescue?

cozietoesie · 15/12/2013 18:01

Yes, she is. And more than a little put-upon it seems.

awww poor lad he will be fine with you catneuterer and cozie the kitten in the box is now with a foster mom till she comes back to the center in a few weeks

cozietoesie · 15/12/2013 19:55

Poor lad.

Can you not explain to CH that there will come a point when living conditions for you and the cats become untenable? (However organized and however committed to the cause you are.)

cozietoesie · 15/12/2013 19:56

Ah that's good, issey. Poor little stick to be treated so savagely.

thecatneuterer · 15/12/2013 20:06

Cozie, I can of course always say no to Celia at any point (although I've had I think five cats foisted on me by neighbours over the years, which is more difficult to say no to). I can be very assertive in life generally and I'm not being 'walked over' or anything, it's just that I feel I have to help.

The problem is that I see how bad the situation is at CHAT. All the cats being dumped on them every day, and the cats being taken in by them that all other charities refuse to take. (Just a couple of weeks ago for example a bag of cats was found on a beach by a dog walker - they would have drowned had they not been found. No other charity would take them. We were a last resort. How could we say no?) So while it is within my power to help then I just feel I have to. And I can of course afford it comfortably.

As long as I can avoid looking like a mad cat lady, and I still have a social life, and not all men are completely put off when I mention I have 'a few' cats Grin, then that's fine really.

cozietoesie · 15/12/2013 20:07

Okey cokey. Just be careful, eh?

issey6cats · 15/12/2013 20:37

i must be a mad cat lady then cos no social life apart from work and cat work lol and all the men i meet seem to be very meh about my cats i seem to attract dog men not cat men and its bad enough here in yorkshire it must be horrendous in london we have people who phone up who are desperate to rhome their cats and unleess a female thats pregnant or with young kittens or kittens under 3 months old (fosters ) we have to tell them that our waiting list is currently 7 months long dosent stop people dumping adult cats outside the gates or on the drive we only have 14 pens and 3 kitten pens

cozietoesie · 15/12/2013 20:39

Is the rescue over the dreaded lurgi, issey ?

issey6cats · 15/12/2013 20:41

cozie yes they had the vet coming down to the center to monitor the situation and all the cats and kittens now get fully vaccinated in the center

bootsycollins · 15/12/2013 22:15

Aahhhh bless you catneuterer, your home must be bursting with love and you must be run bloody ragged! Smile
