Cat being wierd

Help would be appreciated. My mum has a cat. We think she's 16. Mum has gone away. Cat usually sulks a bit after mum leaves but today had been super wierd.

She's sitting staring at the wall not looking up when we call her name (she usually does or comes running) and when I went to pet her she jumped a mile. Almost as if she hadn't heard me.

Is this fairly normal behaviour? Please tell me it is. I can't cope with telling mum her beloved cat is broken....

Sorry at that age I would be worried. Is the cat eating/drinking ok? Behaving ok now she knows you are there? Best scenario she is a bit deaf and didn't hear you so you made her jump. Worst sheix unwell (high blood pressure, neurological disease) and needs to see the vet.

It's not normal in my experience - unless (just possibly) she's a keen mouser, something has moved into your wainscoting overnight and she was concentrating incredibly hard.

If she's still acting in that way tomorrow morning without obvious cause, I'd be tempted to vet her, personally.

That's what I was afraid of.

She's eaten and has drunk some water. She's just ignoring us. And is jumpy. Initially I just thought that she was in a grump because mum left. But it's been all day. Normally she perks up after a while.

Will see how she is tomorrow. And if it's still going on will go to vets.

Difficult when you're looking after eg your Mum's cat. You have to be extra specially careful.

Jumpy could be thyroid?
Deafness and/or blind?
Stroke?

Give her time to settle. Is she eating etc?

Ememem84 · 07/12/2013 23:51

Was tempted to bring her home with me. I was at mums most of the afternoon working. Have left her for now, made sure she's got food water and litter. Normally she's an outdoorsy cat but it's cold raining and I read about deaf cats and google suggested she shouldn't go outside. Have moved her bed into kitchen locked cat flap and put heater on a little.

Will check her tomorrow morning. Hate looking after the silly old thing. Terrifies me that she'll get sick/hurt on my watch and I'll have to break the news to mum.

She ate this afternoon. And I've left her food (another reason for keeping her in-I can actually make sure she's eaten the food not some

Someone else.

Hopefully she'll be ok tomorrow. She is old. And none of us is expecting her to be around for ever. But still. Not on my watch!!!

I was surprised at something coming on so suddenly so if there was to be a problem, I'd also be thinking a wee stroke (which isn't a complete disaster for cats) - but if you haven't been living with her, it's possible that she's had something coming on more gradually and your Mum hasn't clocked it.

See how she is tomorrow morning.

Update. Cat seems fine. She's bouncy. Annoying. Scratchy. Her normal self. Must have just been lonely and sulking because mum left.

Excellent. She probably was just having an almighty sulk - but if it was a wee stroke, she's got over it with no serious effects. As they do.

Glad to hear she's better.
