Does the brand of litter make a difference to poo smells, or just wee?

I've had a few good recommendations on here but am I right in thinking for example that clumping litter helps mainly with urine smells? We don't have a problem with stinky wee, just poo. (We scoop as soon as it's done and use a tray with lid and door, but would prefer less smell if possible, especially for when we are out and have a babysitter for example!) Would a change of litter help?

(Please don't suggest moving the litter box - trust me, I would not have it in the living room if we had anywhere else it could live!)

I use clumping and the smell (if I don't get to it fast) is really not bad at all. I think it has much to do with how good the cat is at covering up - and clumping seems to stick to the solids and cover them up nicely if your cat is halfway diligent.

We use the Tesco wood cat litter. It doesnt see m to smell at all, but then she doesnt use it very often

Ime it DOES make a difference.

Poos can vary in consistency, even 'dry' ones have moisture and clumping litter will stick to it.

Whether the cat buries it does affect it too. Also type of food you give them.

My two cats had worlds best clumping. New cat came with catsan. Catsan seems to permanently smell of ammonia even when clean. All cats now on clumping. New cats tray is smellier than the girls maybe he does big boy poos! Smells less than before though.

I wonder whether the type of tray affects things. I know that a covered tray tends to more or less contain whiffs but on the other hand, all my boys, who use/have used standard open trays, have got out of the tray to really get stuck into their covering up within the tray - via a diligent paw. I've often wondered whether cats who poo in covered trays just walk out and leave it lying because they can't do that?

Recently I used woodchip cat litter, Waitrose own brand and I definitely found the poo smell more whiffy than I did with the clumping type.

Cozie - my 3 all use covered trays. One buries it. The other does a half hearted job. The third does the deed, leaves the tray, walks about 3 ft to the wall or nearby plastic box and scratches it to try and bury the poo. It's ridiculous. But also cute that she doesn't get it.

Just avoid eco friendly 'Catolet' paper pellet litter if your cat is like mine. I bought a big bag of it and girlcat proceeded to wee and poo beside it, or in the shower drain until I admitted defeat and went back for the usual!

I always go with what the troops like - which is fair enough. They're the ones who have to use it.

I think any litter that dries it out will help with smells, since wet things are smellier than dry... We use cats best oko plus and it dries them out nicely. However the main thing to improve smell in our experience is a good high % meat diet. Their poos are smaller, firmer and almost pong free compared to when we got them and they were on whiskas. We buy them bozita, animonda carny, and some other brands from zooplus.

I use catsan, not the clumping one. I don't have any problems with wee smell at all although did when I used the tesco clumping litter.
Crazy cat is also OCD about her tray so will spend ages scraping it and making sure it's all level and clean.....bloody weirdo

cozietoesie · 03/12/2013 20:21

Hah! Seniorboy watches me to check that I've made sure it's all level and clean. I'm not sure that Crazycat is on-message yet. Grin

We use the costco clumping litter. Smells faintly of lemongrass and it works for us. We have two cats with a litter tray each. Its also fairly cheap
