How much & how often?

Probably the most obvious of questions but I've just got the most beautiful 2 yr old tabby and want to make sure I'm feeding her enough.

Her previous owner gave her a pouch in the morning and one at night. I also have dried food and have put a handful or two in during the day but she is definitely keen right now to eat and not sure if I have given her enough to munch on during the day. I wasn't planning on feeding her for about another hour really.

Sorry -really basic stuff but am a newbie to cats and want to get it right as she is just lovely Smile

How much does she weigh?
How old is she?
When you feel over her ribs do you:
a) feel them easily
b) apply slight pressure to feel them
c) apply firm pressure to feel them
d) can't feel them at all
What food are you feeding?

I'm afraid I don't know how much she weighs but she is quite small cat. When I stroke her, I can feel her ribs but they're not sticky out - you have to apply very slight pressure.

She is 2 and a half and I am very smitten. just want to make sure as she seems very hungry but then again, did leave some of her pouch this morning (although did return and polish it off) and also left some of the dried food for a second visit..

I am going to register her with a vet early next week - will they weigh her?

My cat has 4 pouches a day and a scoop of dry.
She is a maine coon but quite a small one only 10lbs and could stand to eat more.
My mums moggies have 2 and a half pouches and some dry.

FushandChups · 27/11/2013 17:56

Hmm - seems she could probably go a bit more possibly. what if I switched to cans - would one can a day be sufficient do you think as they hold quite a lot more (the pouches don't seem to have that much - but what do I know?) This would be in addition to some dried food...

If you can feel her ribs with slight pressure she is currently at perfect weight.
The simplest way to weight her is to pop on the scales yourself and then pop on holding her.
Without a weight and not knowing which foods you are using it is impossible to judge over the internet.
Both my cats get the same 25g of Arden Grange in the morning and 1 pouch of Waitrose essential in the evening. Boy cat has sedentary lifestyle and is correct weight at 4.5Kg. Girl Cat is lean mean hunting machine at 3.1kgs so gets more food for her weigh due to her higher activity.

Thank you all - yes, very hard to help over the Internet so appreciate your comments.

I am good friends with her previous owner and it sounds like what she was feeding her has got her at her ideal weight so will probably stick with that to start (plus, do not own any scales myself as am a bit scared Blush)

As mentioned though, do want to register her properly - they will probably be the best people to advise me on food!
