Blood in urine of female cat

We have a female cat around 3 years old (rescue so not exactly sure of her age). She has a litter tray but comes and goes in and out of the house and most of the time she doesn't use her tray. Around a week ago, she came in from outside and used her tray and we saw some blood. We couldn't be sure where it had come from so decided to monitor for a couple of days and call the vet if it happened again. It hasn't happened again until tonight.

I noticed tonight that the newspaper around her tray was damp and the floor was a bit sticky so I cleaned it all out while she was outside watching me from the garden. Once I finished, she came in and went straight to her tray and there was blood again, although not much pee. I will call the vet tomorrow and have her seen but just wondered if anyone else had experience of this and could offer any advice? A quick Google suggests it could be a urinary tract infection but could also be something much more serious.

shes young so it probably is a urinary tract infection vet will know better than most of us on here though there is a lady who is a vet who posts

Defo get her to the vets asap.. she will probably be in pain and if she is unable to wee properly she will be very uncomfortable. Most likely a UTI but she needs to see a vet tomorrow.

Great, thanks for setting my mind at rest. She seems very well otherwise and not at all distressed but we'll try and get her to the vet tomorrow.

It does sound like a UTI. Make sure she sees a vet today - in the morning if possible. She will be in terrible pain and, if not treated in time, it can cause kidney damage.

Lonecatwithkitten · 21/11/2013 07:40

Definitely sounds like UTI. Less worrying than in a male cat.

Hi, just popping back to say she has cystitis. The vet gave her 2 injections and she's to eat only wet food for 2 weeks plus tuna in brine to encourage her to drink. She will be very upset when her special diet comes to an end! Thank you for all the good advice.

Glad you took her to the vet promptly. But tuna in brine?? Are you sure? Brine is salt water - that dehydrates. Surely it should be tuna in spring water?

kikidee · 23/11/2013 22:44

Yes, absolutely sure. It's to encourage her to drink.

How odd. Giving a cat salt in order to encourage it to drink seems counterproductive. I have no actual knowledge in this area though. It just doesn't sound right.

catameringue · 23/11/2013 22:54

Cats do love salty food though so I can only imagine this cat thoroughly enjoying its' dinner!

cozietoesie · 23/11/2013 23:01

It likely would (Seniorboy despises tuna in spring water but would eat tuna in brine if given half the chance.) It just seems like a heck of a high risk strategy if the cat needs lots of liquid throughput so I know exactly why TCN is edgy. My cats don't get excess sodium if I can help it.
