Sofa Dilemma

We're on the process of moving house and I'm dying to get new sofas. Our current ones 'cleverly' bought to fit in a smallish alcove are v hard to laze on but have been incredibly cat-proof and are just a cheap fabric in an oatmeal colour.

I don't want anything special as we have 2 cats, a dog and a small boy, but do need something comfy and hardwearing. Will cats automatically destroy a soft leather sofa? Assuming velvet is a no? Would really appreciate anyone's experiences or advice!

We had a leather sofa when we got our cats and it understandable got wrecked!

We bought a CSL fabric sofa last year now all our cats are fully grown and it's the best thing we've ever bought! It's one of those squishy velour looking ones with a cuddle chair.

The fabric must be anti pull as ours jump on it and try to use it as a scratch post, but it doesn't pull. The only downside is that hair sticks to it but a cheap DustBuster sorts that out.

I think they can destroy anything when they put their minds to it.

Mine is part leather part fabric. The fabric has taken some battering but is ok. There are two velour cushions that my cat has licked to death urgh! She is such a licky cat.

I have put two throws on top of each other on the most exposed side of the sofa and this seems to limit tge damage.

I have a berber loop carpet however that gets treated like a giant scratching post.

Ha ha, yes, we have Berber loop catmeringue and they especially love to find a corner and pull it up! Luckily our boys aren't licky, sounds like an interesting habit to add to the mix!

They're not too bad for scratching furniture any more (they're almost 4) but sounds from what you say purplepingu like leather isn't a good idea either way. How do you know of fabric is anti-pull? I think we lucked out with our sofas being fairly catproof last time but it was definitely more luck than judgement!

My sofa is brand new and still looks brand new despite living with a sofa destroyer. Completely covering it with throws stopped him.

I always have a 'sacrifice' around. (Currently a much-shredded brown fabric armchair.) It seems that if they have a permitted scratching place they'll take a telling on anything else.

(And it's always fun watching visitors' faces when they see this dilapidated monstrosity sitting in the living room. I can always put a throw over it if needs be because Seniorboy (like previous cats) is not overly fond of visitors and usually stays out of the way.)
