Injured stray - what to do?

Posting here for some advice about a cat I presume to be a stray. He's been coming to our house almost daily for over a year now, in neutered male. Handsome cat, quite big.

I saw him on Saturday and he had a bit of a limp in the left hind leg, didn't seem too bad. He had some food and went off again.

He's come in just now and is clearly lame in the same leg. He's hopping about on three, holding the other one up. Just waiting for him to finish his food before I try and have a proper look, but if he needs a vet what do I do?

If he has an owner I'll feel awkward about taking a strangers cat to the vet and go be honest, I can't afford to take him and foot the bill. My own cats are all insured.

What do I do?

Unneutered males never have owners. I think you can be quite sure he's stray. Are you in London? If so you can take him to the Celia Hammond Animal Trust. They will neuter and treat him for free.

If not then speak to the Blue Cross or the PDSA to see if they can help/suggest something. They should at least be able to point you in the direction of vouchers to get him neutered.

As a last resort speak to the RSPCA. They are generally shite, but they might have a centre you can take him to for treatment. But don't let them keep him - they euthanase at the drop of a hat.

I'd get him treated, even though its probably going to cost you £50 it's an animal in distress and I'm a sucker.

Probably an infected bite wound, toms fight.

It might be worth talking to your usual vet. Mine treats strays for free and helps to get them into a rescue centre. But then she is lovely and I wish my GP were more like her. Best wishes.
