Anyone having a problem with fleas this year

I have an 18yr old cat and never had an issue with Fleas before. He has been advantaged twice in 7 weeks and I have now put a collar on as well. I need to get the house deflead but until the cat is clear there is no point, so I'm in a visious circle. I am flea combing him twice a day and still finding live fleas. Help.....

What kind of collar is it? Some of the bob martin ones can be toxic to animals Sad

mrsv2 · 11/11/2013 21:29

its one by beaphar.....im only planning on keeping it on this week then a few das break before i can use drops again. Dont like having a collar on really with 2 young children around.

Yes, massively, though dog not cat. I have a whippet that never gets fleas, he has such short close fur that you can spot them instantly when he does. And all of a sudden I cannot get rid of them, same here Frontlined twice in about 7ish weeks, still picking them off him, most odd.

Crikeyblimey · 11/11/2013 21:57

Yep - we are overrun :(

Keep treating / vacuuming is my only advice.

Nasty jumpy bitey bastard things :(

Yes. Got new kitten this year, now young cat . She had them a few weeks ago, got into the carpet etc. Cleared her and the house eventually, now they're back. Help! We used Frontline or some equivalent, didn't work, then dp found stuff you give her which made her nuts for about an hour then the fleas died. Fed up as the kids were getting bitten and it coincided with dd having chicken pox, poor love.

It is essential to treat the pet and the house on the same day. I would suggest spot on either Advocate, Stronghold or Activyl (my latest discovery). Then put everything you can in the washing machine, Hoover everywhere then spray with either Indorex or Acclaim which not only kill adult fleas, but also contain an insect growth regulator that works for 12 months.

RightsaidFreud · 12/11/2013 12:52

yes! We've had cats for the past 6 years, NEVER had fleas until recently, and it's an ongoing battle now! Only found one or two on the cats, so we don't feel 'overrun' like others, but just knowing the little blighters are in the house and have probably laid eggs is driving me potty. Constant vaccuming and defleaing every 4 weeks to the day and spraying the house.

glad its not just me. My poor DD is covered in bites but the rest of us including our 14month crawler are fine. More live fleas found again this morning on combing. Sprayed the carpet and sofas again last night, washed cat bedding and sprayed bedding again today. When will it end.........

Same here. The last two Frontline applications we've bought from our local pet superstore (supposed to be the proper stuff - expensive and kept in a locked cabinet) just don't seem to have worked. Usually, once you apply them, the cats react immediately to the sudden effect it has on the fleas. They spend about an hour looking startled, but there's been no reaction the last two times, and I get the feeling they've not worked. That and all the fleas I've seen hopping around! We don't usually have a problem - it helps not having any carpets - but the stuff just isn't working.

TallulahTwinkle · 12/11/2013 14:33

Exactly the same here, had cats for the last 15 years and never a problem but in the last month it has been a pain :( wonder why?

RightsaidFreud · 12/11/2013 15:31

I don't remember where i read it, but i remember reading somewhere that it may be the case that the fleas have become more resistant to certain treatments over the past few years, particularly frontline, as its the most popular. Maybe its like us and antibiotics not working as effective as they used to to treat certain aliments?

You have to remember as well that you can carry the eggs in on your clothes, so if you have friends/family that have cats that maybe aren't as on top with their flea treatments (like certain members of OH's family-which makes me quite mad) you could be bringing them in to your house from there.

mrsv2 · 14/11/2013 13:50

Well ive booked to have the house deflead on Tuesday afternoon.........lets hope the weather is good as i will have to be out for several hours with 2 little ones and my poor 18yr cat will be banished to outside. If my daughter is still getting bitten after this i have no idea what else to do. :( The cat is due another spot-on treatment tuesday so have booked it to co-incide with that

Us too- bloody awful!!

Lonecatwithkitten · 14/11/2013 13:56

The treatments I have listed are still very effective.

Frettchen · 14/11/2013 13:59

Ugh, yes... The cats keep bringing them in, then infesting the dog, who has lovely thick fluffy hair and thus is an ideal target for the little buggers. I'm waiting for my frontline (for the cats) and advantage (for the dog) to arrive, hopefully this weekend. Then it's going to be a fun two days of hoovering, then washing & spraying... then hoovering the next day, washing again and spraying again.

Am itching just at the thought of it.

I've had cats for years and years, and neither they nor my old dog ever had flea problems. This year seems to be unusually awful.

skyeskyeskye · 14/11/2013 14:28

My cat has had them bad this year and also suffers from Flea Allergic Dermatitis, so is falling apart. The fleas only bite me, not 5yo DD.

I have put down expensive spray from the vets, Bob Martin powder, I have tried various things on the cat.. At the moment, the Bob Martin treatment seems to be working better than Frontline which is very unusual.

crypes · 14/11/2013 14:33

The only way I got them under control with my Yorkshire terrier ,and I had tried all the expensive behind cabinet ones which only last for a week, is to buy Bob Martins for £1 at pound land and bath dog every week and add drops every week, after a few weeks fleas gone and not had to re administer.

Catsrus · 15/11/2013 00:05

I had a horrible problem in the summer - finally cracked it by using diatomaceous earth I was very Hmm and made the mistake of buying a HUGE tub - its like talcum powder, a little goes a long way - I just did all the carpets, furniture, etc at the same time I treated the animals with one of the spot on treatments. So that's at least 4 months ago and no treatments since Grin

Rockinhippy · 15/11/2013 00:11

No, we never do, mine have both had the Program anti flea jab - best money I ever spent - it lasts a LOT longer than the vets have you believe :)

Cataline · 16/11/2013 17:16

I bought diatomaceous earth too- sprinkled it everywhere and then it broke the vacuum!! DH was not happy Grin
