Cat yowling a lot!

Just wondering if anyone knows a reason why our cat is yowling. All I can find on Google is about night time yowling but our cat does it in the day. On a weekend when my OH is in bed she'll go outside the bedroom and do this whining thing as if she's trying to wake him up but she'll also just go to another room and do it even if we're all up and about and she could go to any of us. We've had her for 5 years and we believe her to be about 6 yrs old. Previously she has only made these noses when in her cat box going to the vets or cattery. We also moved 6 months ago to a more rural location and she goes out a lot more than she used to but she's only been doing it for about the last 2 months. Any comments much appreciated! x

Just checking - she's neuetered isn't she?

Do you respond to her yowling? And does OH allow her in bed with him?

MummyJetsetter · 09/11/2013 23:15

Yes she's neutered and no he doesn't let her in the room. We sometimes shout to her to come here when she does it but she'll be right near us so not like she needs to shout to us, she can just come to us whenever. She sounds depressed, that's why we're worried.

Well it sounds to me as if she thinks your OH is 'THE ONE' and wants to be with him. I'd be guessing she has Oriental in her ?

Leave the door to his room open a smidge and let her go in. She'll likely head straight to bed and go to sleep with him without trouble. He probably won't even know she's there.

Yowling can be a sign of issues such as thyroid

cozietoesie · 10/11/2013 08:40

Maybe so - but it sounds to me as if she's yearning.

OP

If he doesn't officially like cats sleeping with him, explain that she loves him so much that she wants to be with him. Never a man could resist that from a cat.

Speaking as someone who has three cats queuing up to get in bed with me every morning, and I'm currently in bed with said cats snoozing on me, it doesn't appear to matter if others are available to give attention. Dh gets ignored in favour of me. I am the cat magnet.

I also have a pedigree who has siamese in her history and she miaows like nobody's business when in need of a cuddle.

The others can get annoying when they're bored. 10 minutes hectic chasing game tires them out for a good while.

DulcetMoans · 11/11/2013 21:01

Mine did 'inappropriate vocalisations' which is a bit like yowling but that was related to age (and possibly thyroid). Hard to tell without hearing but he tended to do it when alone and couldn't see you. If you went to see him he would stop and meow normally. Is that similar at all?

MummyJetsetter · 25/11/2013 11:28

We do sometimes let her in but she's long haired so she makes our bed all hairy! I'm sure it is on those occasions that she wants to be close to him! Don't know what it is when we're all sat together! We don't know what breed she is as she just turned up in our back garden in a bit of a state 5 years ago. She is very pretty with long hair, definitely not your average moggy.

Could you post a picture of her?

Have you tried grooming her? Sounds as if she would benefit from it. (They also come to like the concentrated attention of grooming - so that in itself might help with the yowling because it would help her to be more contented.)

Well done for taking her in by the way.

Smile

I don't know how to post a pic.

We have to brush her bum because she gets twigs and poo on her! She goes to a groomer every 6 months to keep her problem areas trimmed, otherwise poo sticks and neck fur gets in her mouth when she's eating. She hates us brushing her! x
