Getting a second cat

I suppose it's been asked before, but...

Our indoor cat is about 6, and is bored. I'm sure of it. I'm always reading or on the computer, my wife is always reading or watching TV, and the cat sleeps about 22 hours a day. Whenever we have visitors (rarely), she is always twining around, but I'm pretty sure she is bored.

We are thinking of getting another cat, as company for her. What do you think? At 6 years old, and never having known another cat, will she accept a newcomer? Would a kitten be seen as less threatening?

I think it depends on character more than age. ours is 7 and we have just introduced a kitten. so far, so good

I think kittens are a little easier to introduce but then you've got to tolerate a small crazy thing in your house for two years until it matures into a well behaved cat. I personally love it but it's not everyone's cup of tea.

Initially most cats would dislike a newcomer but there are ways of managing an introduction to reduce this. Mine give the impression they hate each other yet they do enjoy having spats and chasing each other. It's never with claws out. And when one is not there say at the vets the other two pine for its return.
