Just wondering really what everyone else uses and what is best?

At the moment I'm using cheap Asda bubblebaths that I bought I never used but I'm wondering if I should be using bleach or something antibacterial like flash ?

I don't use bleach or anything too "chemical", some cleaners can actually be quite poisonous for cats (eg. Dettol)

I use very hot water, a drop of washing up liquid and a splash of white vinegar (which is brilliant at getting rid of cat wee smells) - the trays are washed & litter changed daily

I use my husband.

Best to avoid products like flash on pet things because it contains something that is toxic to pets.

Hot water, bleach, soap etc all good.

I use Flash but rinse exceedingly well. (I've got spare trays and a utility room so can have a good go at them and rinse easily.)

....I use my husband......

i don't clean mine, as such i change the litter every other day and give it a rinse with hot water and then bin the tray every 6 months or so, my cats wont go near the tray if i have put bleach on it...

issey6cats · 31/10/2013 21:01

plain hot water when i do a full clean and yes its not actually a good idea to have them sterile as the cat is attracted back to the tray because it smells of them so encourages them to use it again

Lonecatwithkitten · 31/10/2013 22:07

Bleach is not good as it makes the tray smell like another cat has used it.
In the clinic we use either trigene or virkon which kills all the nasties without the ammonia residue.

I use my husband as well. He's very meticulous about it and it takes him ages. I think he just uses very hot water. Maybe a squirt of washing up liquid if it's really dirty. Definitely no harsh chemicals, and absolutely no bleach.

livinginwonderland · 01/11/2013 07:33

Hot water and fairy washing up liquid. Nothing harsher than that and absolutely no bleach.

I came on to say DH as well.
DH believes that it is somehow unsafe for a woman to clean a cat litter tray and it should be avoided when possible (think he might have got crossed wires about pregnant women being careful etc) and who am I to argue with him!

I think he just uses very hot water.

gobbin · 01/11/2013 23:19

Quick spray with Dettol antibacterial, lots of hot water/bit of washing up liquid. Once a fortnight (or every time the litter needs chucking completely.)

TheOneWithTheNicestSmile · 01/11/2013 23:23

hot water only

I rinse the empty tray in the back yard with water from the butt, then stick it in the bath & give it a very fierce swish with the shower head

cats seem happy with that Smile

I just rinse mine out with the outdoor tap when I've emptied them - if they are a bit skiddy I leave them to soak for a few hours...

I accept I am grim Confused

Squirrelface · 02/11/2013 11:57

I give mine a good blast from the hose outside, and then spray with an antibacterial cleaner for litter trays from Pets at Home.
