I have attempted to take my kitten to be spayed three times, what is wrong with her?

I have taken my female 6 month old kitten to be spayed three times, first time she had a blood text prior to the op and had to delay op and have tablets (I'm guessing cat equivalent of antibiotics), went back same thing, bloods, still infection, given more larger dose of tablets. We went again this morning and still a problem, her white blood cell count is too low to operate, no tablets but waiting for the bloods to be analysed.

My poor kitten is now needle traumatised, she is fine and eats and goes to the toilet fine, runs around like a mad thing and has had all up to date inoculations.

What could be wrong?, the poor thing is now asleep worn out.

What has the vet said is likely the problem? (Although they may not know more until the bloods are back.)

Toocold · 28/10/2013 15:08

They haven't said anything, waiting for the bloods. I am confused as never had this problem before, but have always had older cats who had already been spayed, I thought someone on here may have had a similar experience. With the exception of a quick trip up the garden she hasn't been out either and we have no other pets.

So they haven't said what they are testing for?

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/10/2013 15:16

Where did you get her from has she been tested for FIV or lukaemia? Do you know the parents health history?

Bloods aren't always taken before a spay or nueter are they? If you had turned down the bloods to start with and just requested the op they wouldn't have picked anything up and she'd have been done.

Toocold · 28/10/2013 15:24

She came from a stray cat my husband colleague took in, they offered the tests, I said yes as I was worried she would be ill and not make it, (no idea why!) and they have repeated them. She hasn't been tested for Leukaemia or FIV, I assumed (maybe wrongly) that as she has had all jabs, that she was fine. So no idea on parent's history, just that the mum was a stray, luckily she and all her kittens have a home and they have all been spayed! I had a cat (stray) that did have leukaemia, it was heart breaking. She is currently asleep in a Sylvanian house! I have just read that dry food can be bad for them (had no idea) and that is all she will eat apart from cheese she finds on the floor!

Might be worth getting her tested. They are fairly simple tests they take ten mins they have special snap test things. When are the results due back?

thecatneuterer · 28/10/2013 15:36

What's a Sylvanian house? Anyway I can't really comment on what's likely to be the problem. Only your vet will tell you that and I hope they manage to sort her out soon poor thing.

On the dried food front though don't worry. If that's all she'll eat then it's not a problem. Just try to give her reasonable quality stuff if you can.

Toocold · 28/10/2013 15:40

I will call them and ask what they are testing for, it was all a bit manic this morning with half term and taking the kids with me. I can't stand the thought of her being ill, she has had enough stress in the last few weeks.

Sylvanian house is from the toys Sylvanian families, she chooses to sleep in that instead of the plush cat bed and cave we bought for her!, the more uncomfortable looking the better for her!, weird.

Can anyone recommend a good quality dry food?, we have used Whiskas kitten as that is what she was weaned on.

Thank you for all of the responses.

James well beloved is supposed to be quite good.

Gileswithachainsaw · 28/10/2013 15:44

Oh and your cat sounds adorable :)

Bakingtins · 28/10/2013 15:58

Phone the vet and ask them to go through it with you again, you have not been given enough explanation.
An infection would normally result in a high white cell count, you only get a low count if you have overwhelming infection and septicaemia in which case you would have a very sick kitten, or a disease affecting the immune system or her bone marrow's ability to produce cells.
She needs to be tested for feline leukaemia virus, feline immunodeficiency virus and feline infectious peritonitis. The lab should be able to run those tests on the samples your vet has taken, so no more needles. You also need a full blood count done by an external lab (the in house analysers are notoriously unreliable if you get anything other than a normal result) with a blood smear examined under the microscope by a pathologist.
Unless you are feeding her a completely ridiculous home made diet it is nothing to do with her food. Any dry complete kitten food is ok.
Call them back at a time you are not distracted by the kids and ask them to go through it again. You should not be shelling out for tests without adequate explanation of what is thought to be wrong.

Sorry had to go off to sort out a child dressed as a cat!, (I say a child, I mean my ds) thank you all. I am on my own tom, so will call the vet and asked for a detailed explanation. She is adorable, but she is definitely fine in her behaviour, she sprints up and down the stairs and the curtains, I can't see a sick cat doing that.

Thanks again.
