Princess Poppy needs your help again

Poppy climbed PILs curtains 2 days ago and she then fell off the top and she must of landed on her tail because it was bent and had a lump in it. So FIL took her to the vets and she has broken her tail.
FIL has been told that she is not allowed to jump and she will be off balance for a while and to buy a dog cage to keep her in for a while.

The problem is that she is very active and she loves to just follow FIL around and play with the DGC and FIL is worried that this will upset her and make her shy and nervous again. He is also worried that she will be stuck in a cage for months.

Does anyone have any experience of this and could advise us about keeping her interested and possibly give us an idea of how long she will be in the cage for?

I wondered how she was doing. Is FIL still a devoted slave? (It rather sounds like it. Smile)

Poor girl, anyway. Shame about the cage rest but needs must. Has the vet really given no idea of how long she has to stay in one or is it just until she goes for her next appointment?

My kitten broke his tail and vet said it was a hazard of being a kitten and no treatment needed

I appreciate they can break in different places, ours broke his about half way down

I would ring the vet and ask if cage rest is really necessary and for how long

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/10/2013 14:12

I'd do as I was told, put the cage in the room their in most & plenty of toys, scratch post/pad, laser pointer, ipad etc.

I cant imagine it will harm her psychologically, cats are very forgiving after the initial sulking.

You've got an exceptionally doting owner there though, Fluffy, if he's still the same as he was.

How about satin pillows inside the cage, Mrs ?

DidoTheDodo · 28/10/2013 15:28

No advice for you (I agree I'd hate to keep a cat in a cage for any length of time - like 10 minutes!) but Didokitty climbed the curtains (again) this weekend and broke the curtain pole. (Actually much less upsetting than her tail!)

cozietoesie · 28/10/2013 15:38

Just noticed. You give your cats an ipad to use, Fluffy ?

Fluffycloudland77 · 28/10/2013 16:03

He likes shorty & Cody videos. He doesn't have his own he shares mine.

Mrschocolate · 28/10/2013 16:57

Yes FIL is still as devoted to her. He has been beating himself up about her climbing the curtains (he is now looking into blinds)
Apparently the vet said Poppy needs to be in the cage until her next appointment (next Monday)
He has bought a load of pillows and some new toys for her and the biggest cage he could find but he is still very worried about her being grumpy with him for it.

.....He has bought a load of pillows and some new toys for her .......

I should have known.

cozietoesie · 28/10/2013 17:24

Remind me - has she still to be spayed?

If not, how on earth is he going to cope with that?

Mrschocolate · 28/10/2013 17:31

She has been spayed so at least that is sorted now.

I'm so pleased she's got such a loving home after her bad start in life.

If I was your mil I would be working it though...it'll start with blinds and before you know it the house will be carpeted in Berber so she doesn't slip on the laminate, the kitchen will be non-slip flagstones with underfloor heating.

I wish there were more people like your fil, I've read some horrible things on a thread in chat about planting lilies to kill cats who use other people's gardens as a loo.

I'm surprised vets don't hire out cages, I'd pay a £5 every night rather than buy a large crate that I've either got to store for the next near death experience or sell on eBay.

cozietoesie · 28/10/2013 17:44

Phew!

teenagetantrums · 28/10/2013 17:45

Our cat was supposed to stay in a cage for a few weeks after he broke his leg and had it pinned, it did not happen he went mad, tried climbing the side, i was worried he would hurt his leg more especially as he had ripped of the dressings , so we let him out when we were there just made sure he didn't jump, we had piles of boxes everywhere so he could step up to the window and sofa. The vet said we must have done a good job of keeping him caged as his leg healed very wellSmile

cozietoesie · 28/10/2013 17:45

I'm sure I recall at least one of the vest who post here saying that they do rent out cages, Fluffy.

cozietoesie · 28/10/2013 17:45

vets

teenagetantrums · 28/10/2013 17:46

We donated our used cage to the blue cross they do lend them to people who cant afford them.

Mrschocolate · 28/10/2013 18:30

Ah I don't think FIL knew that they rented out cages.

teenagetantrums I can see Poppy being a bit like that. She doesn't like going outside but she doesn't like being in one place by herself she likes following people around the room.

cozietoesie · 28/10/2013 18:41

Sorry, Mrsc. That was sloppy drafting on my part. The vet who posted about the cages was referring to their own practice - it may not apply to other practices. Your FIL will have to ask them.
