Talk to me about the safe room

We're getting a cat/kitten for Christmas (not sure which yet - thoughts welcome! But from the local rescue centre either way), we're away for NYE so actually getting all the stuff to present to DC on Christmas Day then we'll get the cat when we get back

Starting to do the prep work - I knew we'd have to keep it in for a month but have read about a "safe room" to put litter, bed, etc. great idea, especially if DC are banned from the room so the cat has somewhere peaceful to go (DC are 2&5) but where did you make it?!

We have a 3 bed house, is in one room, kids in the other, my parents will be staying in the spare room well into January. Bathroom is very small and the kitchen/sitting room/hall is all open plan without doors.

We do have an ensuite, so though that would work except it gets really cold in there. But it's the only semi self contained room, and is where we'll keep the litter tray anyway.

Our room could work but I'm not keen on the cat sleeping there full time - would rather it kept out of the bedrooms at night (so maybe the littler does need to be in the small family bathroom as it won't be able to access our ensuite if we shut our bedroom door)

I don't know - any ideas?

it isnt so much a safe room you need you decide where you would like the cat/kitten to sleep at night, and during the day as long as the cat can escape too much attention from the children either into another room say the kitchen, or there is somewhere accessible like a covered box with a hole in the side and a blanket inside the box,

despite most people having their cats in bed with them you dont have to i have four cats and they certainly dont share my bed,

the litter tray does have to be accessible to the cat at all times so yes your family bathroom is a good place as easy to clean floors if cat dosent quite get there, to start with though i would also suggest a litter tray downstairs till the cat gets the geography of your house as if its too far from where the cat is he/she might just wee wherever they are standing and thats usually on your hall or lounge carpet

Ok great, that's really helpful. House is pretty small and all on one level - I could create a safe corner of the kitchen and a/he could carry on sleeping there if they wanted to

Thanks!! So excited
