6 month old neutered male cat wee-ed on daughters school bag yesterday, and on the floor today! Any suggestions, please?

What's your current toileting routine? (eg outside/inside, number of trays, how often cleaned etc.)

Coolforcatz · 22/10/2013 22:00

Do you have any other cats? Any cats hanging about outside?

Italiangreyhound · 23/10/2013 09:59

He has one litter tray which I change when he poops in it.

There are a few cats in the neighbourhood but rarely in the garden.

He weed on the kitchen floor in the night, luckily it is lino.

Thanks Cozie and Cool any advice, please/

You need 2 litter trays as some cats like one for wee and one for poo. Put the second one where he went before, once he is using the tray consistently you can start moving it bit by bit.

You need to clean the areas exceptionally well with 10% biological washing liquid/powder to 90% water.

Italiangreyhound · 23/10/2013 14:40

I have never heard of two little trays before, do other people use two litter trays?

If you have two trays can you just put them next to each other (2 cat household) or do they need to be in different locations?

msrisotto · 23/10/2013 15:21

The rule of thumb is one litter tray per cat, plus one so in a two cat household, that would be three litter trays. Check out Vicky Halls website

No one has ever said this before about two litter trays. Can I ask if lots of people have two?

Thanks one and all.

Ok, msrisotto I think you might be right! last night there was a poop in the tray and I caught the cat doing a round the garden in a circle dance in the corner of the dinning room. So I quickly removed the poop and he used the litter tray.

Question is, I really need the litter tray to be in the utility, can they both be there, there really is no where in the house I want a litter tray due to young kids! please help, two in same room OK?

Seniorboy has two trays to himself and uses them both. (He's not keen on peeing and pooing in the same tray and although I work at home, so can clean trays as soon as I see they've been used, peeing and pooing often follow each other so quickly that I wouldn't have caught it.)

Two trays is best, I think. If you'd like to try them in the same room, why not give it a bash - but try not to put the trays right next to each other if you can avoid it so that there's no smell drifting close by to his sensitive nose. (We have one in each of two rooms which are pretty close to each other so not cheek by jowl but not a huge distance apart.)

Best as well to remove deposits as soon as you see them. Seniorboy prefers clumping litter so I just scoop any deposit into a newspaper parcel, dispose of it and 'freshen' the tray surface. That seems to do it.

Best of luck.

Cats are naturally very clean and having their toileting worked out, in my experience, makes a big difference to their lives and contentment.

I've always taken the view that if they're doing something they shouldn't do, and there's no physical reason, then there's something wrong with their environment and it's up to me to work out what (eg toileting arrangements they don't like, other cat etc) and see what I can do to fix it.

See how it goes, anyway. You've got some strategies now so good luck.

Well done, Italian. Did you manage to fit them both in the utility room?

Italiangreyhound · 28/10/2013 01:43

Yes, plenty of room thanks.
