Cat has adopted us

Right, we found a cat in our garden on Saturday evening and he has now decided he lives with us. Unfortunately our own cat isn't quite so enthusiastic about this arrangement and is quite stressed. So far, I have put notices up in the local chip shop and post office, and a couple near where we live, plus a notice will go in the local newspaper tomorrow and dd posted on a local rescue centre facebook page. We took a trip to be vets this morning and he is unneutered and not microchipped (why, oh why). The problem we have is that if we cannot trace his owner then we seem to be a bit stuck as the rescue centres are full. I do not want to keep him because our four year old girl cat doesn't like him. He has apparently been around a while as some people down the road have been feeding him and letting him into their shed. We can't keep him out of our house as we have a catflap. So I know none of you can really help, but any further ideas on what to do would be appreciated. Hope this at least sort of makes sense.

Good idea. You've got a largish, enclosed porch? Fab. Well of course tonight the weather is going to be exceptional, so no one can surely object to saving a poor homeless cat from a hurricane. Can you get a litter tray?

Wind really getting up now. Fed cat this morning, but he's nowhere to be seen now. I think he might have sought shelter by now.

Sorry to hijack your thread Veneto! Thanks

RandomMess · 27/10/2013 14:00

If you find a stray and the local shelter doesn't have room for them would they still get it neutered and microchipped??

Not that I have a stray but just wondered what their policies are for that kind of situation?

thecatneuterer · 27/10/2013 14:07

Random, i can't speak for all shelters, but Celia Hammonds certainly do that. We have our own vets though so that makes life easier.

You can also get vouchers from the CPL/RSPCA/Blue Cross for neutering strays in private vets I believe.

No worries Teamed. Our little adoptee is camping out in our conservatory at the moment. Seems quite content. At least this means he isn't upsetting our own cat, although not really a long term solution. Rescue centres don't seem to have room for him, especially as he appears to just be lost and have a family somewhere. However, no response at all to posters, advert in local newspaper or leaving description with vets and rescue centres. We are currently looking for a home for him ourselves. Fingers crossed someone somewhere will want him (or his owner appears).

Cat reappeared this morning unscathed!
Phoned a few shelter/cattery places today. They think he might have been lost in a house move, or possibly dumped in the local woods. I've put a box with blankets out in a sheltered spot tonight, and a lady is coming out tomorrow with a scanner to see if he's microchipped.
She also suggested a few lost & found facebook pages to try.

cozietoesie · 28/10/2013 18:53

Hopefully he'll have a chip. Let us know how it goes.

TeamEdwooooooo · 29/10/2013 20:49

Spoke to next-door-but-one neighbour today. She had taken the cat to the vet a couple of weeks ago and it's not chipped Sad
He is neutered. She's spoken to all the local shelters but they don't have any spaces for now.
He's being fed by four households (two semis) but none of us can take him in due to allergies or other pets. I've put a "Found" poster in the local shop, but the neighbour says she first spotted him about 4 weeks ago and there have been no "Missing" posters.
It's really sad, because he's a lovely cat who deserves a loving home. DS1 has fallen a little bit in love with him, but DH sneezes just looking at him!

cozietoesie · 29/10/2013 21:04

Any friends or family who might be feeling in need of some cat company?

Scarletohello · 30/10/2013 00:30

Just a suggestion, you could always put a thread up on chat saying you have a lovely cat that needs a home..?

LittleNoona · 30/10/2013 00:41

We've been kind of adopted this way too!

Lovely black male - not neutered either. We have 4 cats already but this black cat had been hanging around for more than a year.

He's not particularly skinny but he's obviously a brawler - scarred ears and so on - no collar or anything.

He comes and goes as he pleases, eats with our cats, roams the house for somewhere cosy to sleep, he's like one of my own now Smile

TeamEdwooooooo · 30/10/2013 14:58

Oh dear. The kids have named him. Grin

issey6cats · 30/10/2013 16:24

oops looks like hes staying then

cozietoesie · 30/10/2013 17:06

Yep - once you've named them.......... How are DH's snuffles?

Fluffycloudland77 · 30/10/2013 18:06

We're in pottery barn rules territory then.

You name it you own it.

TeamEdwooooooo · 30/10/2013 19:35

Well, Coulson may be staying, but staying outside!

TeamEdwooooooo · 04/11/2013 15:22

Coulson has gone. Local shelter had a space come up, so he's been taken there. He'll be wormed and treated for a lump under his front leg (unless it's leukemia, then he'll be PTS) and found a lovely new home.
It's a Blue Cross rehoming centre.

cozietoesie · 04/11/2013 16:02

Good luck to Coulson for a new home and life.
