I don't want to share a bed with my cat!

Adopted 2 cats last week. Now they are more settled the younger one keeps trying to get into bed with us at night! He wants to sit on our heads & purr like a motorboat. Is this a compulsory part of cat owning? Our door doesn't have a handle so he is able to push it open! Any tips?

Sorry, but yes it's compulsory. You'll grow to love it :)

Auntidote · 19/10/2013 08:55

The sitting on your head thing isn't compulsory. Just move him down to by your feet every time and stroke him there til he relaxes and is comfortable.

Cats are wonderful. Enjoy your new family.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 19/10/2013 08:55

I'm going to lock him into DD's room tonight then, I reckon the chances are higher of her sleeping through it!

We share the bed with both our two. I find myself apologising if I move and kick/hit the one of them lol

MokuMoku · 19/10/2013 08:56

I have to admit I shut my cat in the kitchen/dining room/living room area at night because he wakes up at 4.30am and insists on me coming down and feeding him even if he has food in his bowl.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 19/10/2013 08:59

Another heartless one moku! I have enough disturbed nights from the kids, am pretty unwilling to spend half my night battling the cat too. The other one occupies herself elsewhere. If the litter tray weren't in the downstairs toilet I would shut the kitchen door on them...

our cats are expert at breaking into bedrooms apprently 4.00am is the time that everyone should be up according to them, one of them comes and pats me on the face very gently it drives me potty.Of course im the idiot that started getting up to feed so i could back to sleep so only myself to blame.

cozietoesie · 19/10/2013 09:03

Mine have always slept inside the bed and are extremely well behaved. In fact I couldn't sleep nowadays without a furry body snoring gently somewhere under the duvet. Best sleep aid of all.

Ireallymustbemad · 19/10/2013 09:18

No it's not compulsory! My cats are shut in the kitchen overnight. Their cat flap, beds and food are in there.

I can't stand them in our bed apart from my morning cuddle like right now Smile.

cozietoesie · 19/10/2013 09:27

My only wish is that they wouldn't sleep so as to take up most of the bed. I've got a big kingsize bed but you'd never know it. Seniorboy lies long, diagonally, in the middle and I'm left with a narrow vertical strip on the edge.

cozietoesie · 19/10/2013 09:28

Aww - he's washing under the duvet. Lots of sooking sounds. I don't care really - he can have his space. He's an old boy.

Ooh having the cat sleep in bed with you is one of the joys of cat ownership. Like a big soft furry hot water bottle. Bliss.

MokuMoku · 19/10/2013 09:36

I keep the kitty litter by the back door.

I do feel a pang of guilt sometimes but he is fine on his own and like you I get woken up enough by the kids.

thecatneuterer · 19/10/2013 09:39

I find it hard to sleep without the comforting weight of cat on me/next to me. Last night I had five on the bed. The main problem is that they weigh the duvet down so much its a real struggle to try to adjust it/pull it up as I'm pulling the weight of five overweight cats with it.

Mojavewonderer · 19/10/2013 09:45

I have six cats and all but one likes to sleep on the bed that I share with my husband. We don't mind at all and we also end up apologising if we kick them accidentally.
The only thing they do which is annoying is chase our feet if we move them (bed monsters my husband calls is because he taught them to do it) and they like to stick there claws in but I am getting the hang of tucking the cover under my feet so they can't do it.
If you don't like them coming into your room then just close your bedroom door.

GemmaTeller · 19/10/2013 09:46

Another sleeper with cats here Smile

fat old cat sleeps at the side of my head and boy cat sleeps near my feet, when it gets really cold they get under the duvet.

Funny thing is they wont sleep over DH's side, its always my side.

We are semi heartless. Our cat sleeps with us every other night. This is because We love her in with us, but accept that we sleep better when she is downstairs.

cozietoesie · 19/10/2013 09:55

I'm trained, sadly. Too many years of boys who regarded bed as an absolute right.

ArabellaBeaumaris · 19/10/2013 10:07

You should have heard DP's groans as the cat wriggled his way down under the duvet Grin I was up 3 times last night - once with either child & once with the cat. Less than ideal for us.

What with one crapping on the doormat & the other waking us up they are not popular with DP!

I lock ours in the utility, he has everything he needs in there plus he disgraced himself weeing on the bedroom curtains so sleeping up here is out of the question.

We had to take the door handle off though, it locks but he will jump up to pull it as often as is needed for dh to stomp downstairs muttering about "going to live on a farm".

ArabellaBeaumaris · 19/10/2013 10:26

Does it confuse them to have their litter tray relocated ie if we put it in the kitchen by night & toilet by day?

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 19/10/2013 10:29

Get two, Arabella. They like having more than one and it means you don't suddenly have to jump out of bed when you're falling asleep because you forgot to relocate it.

TheNunsOfGavarone · 19/10/2013 10:57

Yes it's compulsory and you're the staff now so get used to it Grin

I loved sharing my bed with my cats but I can see having them sleep on your head might be a bit difficult especially when purring like a motor!

Old boy used to curl up beside me like a snuggly little hot water bottle. Old lady used to prefer sleeping on top of the duvet near my feet but I wished she wouldn't as I felt so guilty when I kicked her accidentally in the night. Towards the end of her life she decided she wanted to sleep on my knees instead, which seemed a very odd and uncomfy place Confused

They both had to be put to sleep earlier this year and I miss them so much.

We have 2 cats. The older one (8 years old) sleeps on our bed every night. Next to DH.... Next to me... In between us... By out feet... By our heads.... All over the place!

The younger one (2 years old) is still a little adventurer and is all over the house... Sometimes on our bed... But actually could be anywhere in the house!

You'll get used to it! I love cat cuddles Smile
