That's very late to spay. It is recommended at 4 months, I think you need to speak to the vet asap.

cozietoesie · 17/10/2013 21:51

You're lucky they haven't been in heat before - they could have come into heat at 4/5 months old!

Get them both booked in directly and keep them inside the house if they're outdoor going cats. Pregnancy isn't too much of a worry if they're going to be neutered but if their mind is on one thing, they could go doolally and wander into the path of a car or something if there was a handsome bit of stuff on the other side of the road.

cozietoesie · 17/10/2013 21:53

Sorry - I see they're indoor cats. So watch them like hawks. The slightest hint of an open door or window and they could be away. Little sirens with the talents of Houdini when they're wanting to party.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/10/2013 21:56

Ooh heat is noisy. I don't envy you that at all.

Our vets made us keep an old breeding queen intact until she'd had a season to prove she wasn't pg but that was because he was pro life.

Ring the vets and tell them you want this cat neutered ASAP.

cozietoesie · 17/10/2013 21:59

Was that a bengal queen, Fluffy ?

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/10/2013 21:59

No it was a Persian.

cozietoesie · 17/10/2013 22:04

I was trying to imagine what it would be like to handle a Bengal on heat - but a Persian wouldn't be much fun either. You must be very patient.

Fluffycloudland77 · 17/10/2013 22:42

I was only young, she tried to persuade our neutered male to do the honours.

He was very bewildered by the whole process.

catameringue · 18/10/2013 00:02

Once heat kicks in there'll be no question. Buy some ear plugs.

My vets does the snip when they are in heat if you're certain she is not up duffed, as the female tissue is swollen and easier to find.

EustaciaVye · 20/10/2013 08:53

sorry to hijack. getting a girl kitten soon. what is standard age for spaying? I thought 6 months but is that too late?

Sparklingbrook · 20/10/2013 08:55

It depends on the vet Eustacia, it's 4 months ish round here, some vets will even do it earlier than that.

When's the new arrival arriving? Envy

EustaciaVye · 20/10/2013 09:03

In 2 weeks. I am very excited. Hoping my 7yo boy cat likes her.

Sparklingbrook · 20/10/2013 09:15

I would love a kitten but I know for a fact 5 year old existing cat and DH wouldn't. Sad

EustaciaVye · 20/10/2013 09:21

My current cat made a neighbour kitten friend in our old house. was lovely seeing them play. then we moved and whilst he is fine I actually think he would like a playmate.

Sparklingbrook · 20/10/2013 09:45

He sounds the sociable sort Eustacia. Sparkling Cat hates all other cats. She likes to admire the male tabby over the road but if he comes across to see her she doesn't like it. Grin

catameringue · 20/10/2013 09:51

I'd say around 6 months is usual because there are concerns that the op prevents further growth, so it's a balancing act.

EustaciaVye · 20/10/2013 10:11

thanks.I will talk to my vet when I take her in initially.

thecatneuterer · 20/10/2013 11:30

Celia Hammonds recommends neutering no later than five months. We do it on the cats in our care from 4 month.

EustaciaVye · 21/10/2013 17:07

my vet says 5 1/2 months

cozietoesie · 21/10/2013 17:17

The litter brother of my darling Oneago got a same-age female pregnant at 5 months.

EustaciaVye · 21/10/2013 19:30

might. check with another vet.

sashh · 22/10/2013 12:37

Fluffy

Mine tried to get a male friend to do it, he was Shock as she backed up to him with her tail to one side.

What's this about 'late' and 'very late'?

Apart from the obvious ability to breed does it do any harm to be older?

Mine was a stray, I thought about 6 months because of her size but the vet said about 1 year.

She arrived in November and was 'done' in early January and obviously she couldn't be done at 6 months earlier as I didn't know she existed.

cozietoesie · 22/10/2013 12:57

I guess it's because you simply have no idea when they're going to come into heat/get pregnant and for a very young cat/more or less a kitten, giving birth at - say - 8 or 9 months could be very difficult physically. And for the kittens.

I'm sure some of the posters who work for rescues could give you some sad details about animals they've had to rescue who bred too soon. You only have to look at the stats for comparative mortality among domestic and non-domestic cats to see some of the consequences as well.
