I'm afraid I really don't know and also am a little bit sceptical about diets helping. I feed all mine (20) cats the same thing and some produce nice, firm almost unnoticeable poo, and some stink the place out. So i'm not sure that it's really food that is the deciding factor.

I just buy a lot of Febreze odour neutralising spray.

mouses · 23/09/2013 13:02

ah i see, can i ask what you feed? having 20 you sound like having good knowledge on whats best for them.

though i understand all cats tolerate different food re dry and wet.
thanks

I feed James Wellbeloved dry and Butchers Classic tins. A couple of them will only eat the dry. Most eat both.

Butchers Classic is vet recommended as apparently it has less nasty additives than other wet food and is also good for teeth/gums.

For dry food as long as you avoid the cheap stuff (Whiskas, Go Cat etc) then it's probably all OK. The cheap stuff is really bad for them though and can particularly cause blocked bladders.

I have no idea but for the smell, like TCN I use a LOT of febreze and also sprinkle litter fresh in their trays too.

mouses · 23/09/2013 15:26

thats good, im feeding butchers classic. iams for dry.

the kittens, one will eat anything not fussed at all , the other wasnt keen on any wet or dry so tried raw which he loves, but the other end dont seem to agree! Hmm

oh and i have oust neutraliser, might try febreeze

Oust is pretty good too. Don't get the Febreze tropical one though (I think that's what it's called - it's pink and flowery). I bought it as it was on offer. It's NASTY.

I had a lot of trouble getting the diet right for my maine coon. In the end, we went for Iams (not the fish varieties). This and Catsan have made the most difference to the odour.

I also have a litter locker for used litter and poo, which keeps the smell locked away. If the smell is lingering, I have a plug in air freshener on for half an hour and that deals with it.

mouses · 23/09/2013 23:51

whats a litter locker?

It is a bit like one of those nappy bins that condenses the "solids"!

It is quite pricey, but I have found it really useful.

catameringue · 26/09/2013 19:31

I changed my cat food to a dry indoor cat one, by royal canin, and the poo smell was cut in half. Wet food makes them stink imo.

mouses · 26/09/2013 19:51

oh i see,

i use a small bin that clips shut (lives outside!) dog bag the poop and chuck it in there - it the aroma from the tray that still lingers. . . . so i thought if i change what goes in ... it might change what comes out Grin

i have 3 plug ins, cans of neutralising spray and gels :-)
