Burst abcess :o(

Our cat was involved in a pretty bad fight the other day (fur all over the lawn and quite a few war wounds!). We've been keeping an eye on him as he's been a bit subdued and was going to take him to the vet tomorrow if he didn't improve.

Anyway, it looks like he has an abcess on his leg which has burst. :o(

Other than take him to the vet tomorrow. What can I do?!

Bathe thoroughly with warm salty water. This helps to remove pus and start the healing process. Do not use any human antiseptics as they are irritant to cats.

Our cat had a giant abscess on her little face (caused by a puncture wound from our twatty neighbour putting nails with their tops snipped off along all his fences-but that's a whole other story!) and it popped horribly ( all over DP's 35 year old vintage train set that FIL had carefully kept and brought round for Ds that day Grin ) and looked dreadful but cleaning with warm salty water certainly helped. Keep a close eye on your cat as a trip to the vets for antibiotics could be needed if the infection lingers. Our cat was very subdued and not herself at all when the abscess developed and this was particularly pronounced on the day it finally burst. She rapidly improved after this though so hopefully your boy will be the same! Good luck.

cataline I'm fairly sure it's not legal to have dangerous things on your fences. I would investigate - call the Council etc etc.

What kind of cat did he fight with?

Mine had a bad fight the other day and there was fur everywhere.

I think you're right TCN. I'll have a look see.

It seems to be a grey area - and pretty pale grey at that.

Speak to the Council.

Our boy had this, right on the base of his tail by his bum! Is was a burst abscess from a fight he had been in, and it was massive. We took him right to the vet when we discovered it and the vet cleaned it out and had to staple it. Luckily he didn't have to have any stitches, but he did have to wear one of those cones for a few days to stop him biting at it.

According to our community police officer, the neighbour can do what he likes in his own garden, and I quote " you should see what they do in (insert name of nearby rundown town) Shock
