I have been meaning to come back and update you on my mad kitten.I came here last June looking for advice on ' kitten madness' . I had found a 7 week old kitten on the roadside and was aghast at how hyper it was and really wondered if I was up to keeping it.
Well,I got great advice here and Cleo is now nearly 5 months old. As you all said, she has indeed calmed considerably and I can honestly say we couldnt be without her nowSmile. We absolutely adore her and she has brought so much laughter and fun to the house. The dog remains a bit non-plussed about her but overall it has been a great success.
Only thing I am wondering about is this..she will have to be a housecat as we are on a very busy main road. The house is big really and she has the run of it ,dashing about upstairs and downstairs etc so gets plenty of opportunities for fun, climbing, running etc.But the other day she climbed out of the kitchen window and luckily she ran into the garage so I was able to shut the doors and contain her but I am wondering if she will keep trying to get out or will the urge to escape eventually go away? I would dearly love to let her out but I know she wouldnt last very long with the road. She has tried several times over the past few days to get out the windows..I keep them closed now mostly when she is dashing around but I am really hoping that eventually she will lose the urge to roamHmm.
What do you all think?

Has she been neutered yet? Sounds to me as if she wants to go out on the razzle.

thecatneuterer · 20/09/2013 21:56

Glad she's doing well. Firstly has she been spayed now? Her hormones will be starting to kick in otherwise which will make her even more keen to get out. Five months is the time to do it.

Certainly the older they get the less bothered they are about going out, but it will be a long time till then. You are certainly doing the right thing though. It's much safer for her to be indoors and she can still have a happy and fulfilled life. You will have to be very, very careful with windows and doors though.

Oh do you think cozie ? Already ? I am planning on next month actually when she will be 6 months ish.I have just read your advice also on the other thread about the road.So do you think that generally the wanderlust lessens a bit once they are neutered?

I think it helps - and yes, 5 months is easily within the time frame for coming into heat. (And, sadly, getting pregnant.) If she's healthy and a decent weight, I'd phone the vet and book her in ASAP.

thecatneuterer · 20/09/2013 22:01

We recommend doing it at five months. Six months is often too late.

Applecrumbly · 20/09/2013 22:02

Thanks catneuterer..great advice from you two pros as usualSmile. So 5 months is not too soon then?Ok then, thats settled so.I will update again in a while.Thank youFlowers.

Could you build her an outdoor run? I know someone with bengals who has an outdoor run with a bit of shade for the summer months.

cozietoesie · 20/09/2013 22:06

And watch the doors and windows like a hawk. They can be dashed determined when they want to go out and party and while I'm not too worried about her getting pregnant if you've managed to make an early appointment for spaying (which would take care of any problem) a degree of inattention on her part could lead her into the path of a car.

Applecrumbly · 20/09/2013 22:13

Ok I will be very vigilant and will get her spayed asap. Thanks fluffy also. And yes cozie she does seem to be very determined at the moment to 'go and party' as you sayGrin.

PS - I've found that most dogs - particularly the big flobbly breeds are nonplussed by cats. It's as if they're always half a second behind the cat in any thinking process.

Smile

Oh you are definitely bang on there about the dogs.Ours is a retriever cross so big and flobbly indeed. Kitten runs rings around her - both metaphorically and physically Grin.
Dog is generally to be found staring at this scrap dashing around looking like she is thinking W T F is that lunatic doing now? She then takes herself off to a quiet and peaceful corner of the house.

I had one of my kittens spayed when she was 5 months old. She was acting like a right hussy and calling very loudly.

Once she was spayed she was fine and wanderlust disappeared

ClaraOswald · 21/09/2013 13:44

Once she's spayed, she will be less likely to stray far from home if you do let her out.

Applecrumbly · 22/09/2013 20:48

Thanks Flowers.
