I will start by saying i will be taking him to the vet (again) but just looking for opinions and advice.

My cat who is now 5 does his business right outside his litter tray. It is very runny and mucusy, sometimes with blood in it. Any ideas.

I have tried lots of things like
Different foods
Changing the litter
Moving the tray
and other things i cant remember

This has now been going on for years and its really really getting to me

Really the vet is the only one who can advise on the actual poo. But as for missing the tray, what sort of tray do you have? The covered ones are generally better for aim.

It is covered and its not about aim, he doesnt even attempt to use the tray. The tray is completely clean too.

It sounds (at least partially) like a food intolerance to me. I note that you've had him to the vet before on the matter but what sort of foods have you tried him on?

starshaker · 18/09/2013 14:03

I have tried him or raw, on sensitive, on seriously stupidly expensive and various other foods and its still the same

My cat had the same problem and the vet thought he might have some chronic inflammation/infection in his intestines - he had an antibiotic injection (to treat that and various other low-grade infections) and it helped a great deal, his poo looked much more normal. He is much olde rthan your cat though (17). And sadly he still poos on the floor every few days, but we currently have issues over a recently-adopted kitten so I think he's got a lot to get used to at the moment.

If they are in pain when they poop they associate it with the tray so are too frightened to poo in it. My sphynx did this for a while. She had IBS. Was happy to we win the tray.

Don't tell the cat off as they are upset already. U need to get the problem solved with the vet first, then lots of reward and cuddles and encouragement to use the tray. It's hard and frustrating but you can resolve it .

You should definitely get the cat checked if there's blood in the poo.
