Sudden cat death.

We have just found our poor cat by the side of the road dead. Not a mark on her. No frayed claws. No broken bones( I have checked her all over). A very tiny spot of blood around her mouth. We can't understand what might have happened. Our road is fast and if she had been hit by a car it would have been obvious I think. I feel worse because we have taken her on from a friend that moved away and I would at least have liked to be able to tell her what happened. Any ideas, anyone?

I think she must have been hit by a car and the injuries are all internal. I'm so, so sorry. It must be devastating.

SparkyTGD · 15/09/2013 14:40

I'm very sorry Sad

I'd assume head injury from vehicle.

Sophiedotty · 15/09/2013 14:53

So sorry to hear that, thinking of you.

lurkedtoolong · 15/09/2013 15:22

I am so so sorry. As others have said I think she must have been hit by a car and suffered either internal or head injuries. If it's any comfort (and having lost my own cat recently I don't know if it will be) it's highly unlikely that she suffered.

Hello lovely I'm sorry for your loss. Flowers

I lost a cat to a car many years ago. She looked like she was sleeping. x

ClaraOswald · 15/09/2013 15:42

She was hit by a car, probably her head was clipped as it caught her.

My first cat to die went that way. No other mark on him except for some blood around his mouth.

I'm so sorry. I know it's no comfort, but she would have gone instantly.

lljkk · 15/09/2013 15:44

Sorry for your loss. Thanks At least it was quick.

Lonecatwithkitten · 15/09/2013 15:45

As a vet this is a not uncommon scenario usually car accident causing head injury most likely is brain bleed. It will have been very quick and your lovely cat won't have suffered.

Thank you all. You've all made me cry. She had just settled in and was so happy yesterday running round the garden. We lost a cat to the road in April, but we had already promised to have this one and our friend basically wouldn't let us change our mind, despite me saying about the road. I absolutely won't be having another cat while I live here.

So sorry.

You may not want another one for a while after your sad loss but if the time comes, bear in mind that there are loads of elderly cats and cats with special needs (blind cats for example) for whom rescues might be trying to find a place as a house cat only. Just a thought for you.

Viewofthehills · 15/09/2013 17:05

Thanks Cozie. You might be right there. I always think about cats being outdoor creatures and it not being right to keep them in, but there are exceptions.

Cats with FIV too they mustn't go out.

SummerRain · 15/09/2013 18:24

I found one of mine on the road exactly the same, not a mark but a bit of blood by his mouth.

I'm so sorry, it's devastating and a sudden death really hits you hard. Take care of yourself, you'll be a bit shaken for a while Flowers

So sorry View

I'd echo what cozie says about older/infirm cats, I have 2 elderly ones, one blind & one with arthritis so for the last few months they have become house/backyard cats as they cannot jump up onto the outside walls any more. It's taken away the worries about them being hit by a car (only to be replaced with other worries but that's a whole new thread!)

Take all the time you need to grieve for her Thanks

ZebraOwl · 16/09/2013 01:35

I'm so sorry View, that must have been a horrible shock Thanks

I echo what the others have said about - when you feel ready to let another feline into your life - offering a home to a cat who isn't able to go outside for whatever reason.

I'm so sorry :( My heart goes out to you. I don't know what else to say. Thanks
