What could this lump be? Slightly worried.

Bonzocat had her annual booster last week. This week I noticed a kind of lump on her right shoulder. I suspect nothing to do with the jab, as its in a different place. Anyway, it's round and flat, about the same as a point coin. It feels solid rather than fluid filled, and is in the skin, not the muscle or bone underneath. When you pull the skin it moves with the skin rather than being tethered to the tissues beneath. It's not painful and there is no sign of injury (no entry wound, no blood or pus).

Any ideas? I'm going to have to take her to the vet aren't I?

About the size of a pound coin. She's 3 BTW, neutered, in good health and has free indoor / outdoor access except for being locked indoors after dark.

I think I'd be guessing at a fatty lump. Best to check with the vet though - it would ease your mind.

Hi
I posted on here a month or so ago about my cat's lump on the top of her shoulder blade, it sounds very similar, it was hard and you could move it, it eventually swelled to the size of a golf ball. I was really worries, took her to the vet who took a sample which came back that there was basically nothing, the vet said it was a low grade infection and after about a week the lump went down. You should probably get her to a vet, but googling cat lumps is very scary, I know! So I wanted to give you a good news story.

Thanks. I'd purposely avoided google for this reason. I was going to book her in for once DS1 is back at nursery the week after next. I do suspect a fatty lump as DH has several of them and it does feel like his. His can be quite painful, so if that's what it is I might see if it can be removed.

Best not to prod it but do keep a close eye on its size.

Right. This is wierd. Its diameter has shrunk, but it has become thicker. I'd say about the size of a chickpea, but smooth. Bonzocat is now getting a bit cross with me when I cop a feel. Maybe I should be sounding the sporn klaxon in anticipation of pus....

If it's shrinking, I'd keep with your planned schedule - but why not phone the vet to discuss on Monday morning?

bonzo77 · 01/09/2013 09:26

Yes, I think I will.

Update. I called the vet last Monday. I spoke to the nurse who suspected a reaction to the booster and to keep an eye on it for another few days, and to call back if it had not shrunk considerably. It's now about the size of a lentil, and a bit softer. Will keep an eye till it goes, but I'm not so worried. I luffs my little kitty cat!

That's good bonzo. Seniorboy had a lump earlier this year but as he was due to go to the vet the next week I just kept an eye on it to see that it wasn't growing or changing - and by the time he got there, it had actually disappeared.
