Siamese just started drooling

My nearly 5 year old male Siamese has just started drooling today when on my knee. He's never done this before and is generally very aloof and doesn't really show affection much. He only purrs very rarely, only for me too. He doesn't knead with his paws at all, unlike my other cat.

I'm worried this is a sign of illness. He's due a vet visit for his booster in the next 2 weeks anyway, but wondered if anyone experienced anything similar?

The only thing different is that my other cat caught 2 sparrows today, could that set the Siamese off salivating?

Also a couple of days ago he came in with a tiny patch of what looked like oil on his head, suspect he'd been sat under a car. Could that cause him to drool? It's on his head, so he can't lick it off.

None of my Siamese have ever kneaded. I've been told it's because you get Siamese at an age when they're completely weaned from Mum so have grown out of the habit - but who knows.

As he's never done it before, mention to the vet when he goes - and get the vet to check his teeth out. Has he been making any mouthings at all?

I have a drooler, he's nearly one and not Siamese (don't know if that makes a difference.) does he only drool when petted? This can often be a natural reaction. As he's not usually so affectionate this may be why you've just noticed. I'd call the vet if worried though.

Thanks. Cozie, what do you mean by mouthing? His teeth don't seem to be bothering him.

Sort of smacking his chops. A bit like someone without their dentures in. Sorry I can't describe it better than that.

It may not be his teeth but have you had a look in his mouth to confirm they're fine or is he resistant to that? Has he been sick at all recently?

I'm only mentioning this because it's something new in a mature cat. (If he was a drooler generally, I would have thought you 'd have noticed it by now.)

If you're concerned, why not give the vet practice a phone and see if you can advance his booster a tad? (There's usually a little leeway.) Then you could get his mouth checked over while he's there.

Thanks Cozie, I think I'll get down to the vets this week. He won't let me look in his mouth really. He hasn't been sick, but he's terrible for chewing toys and things.

I've never seen him drool before

Good luck. Let us know how he gets on.

I will do, thanks.
