Worried about cat - what do you think is wrong?

My oldest cat is probably about 10 years old. She's a moggie with main coon in her and was a rescue cat.

In the last week I keep finding her asleep in weird places and she's stopped coming when I whistle that its food time - I'll whistle, the others will come and I'll put the food out and then go into the room she's in and she'll start mewing for food so ill have to take her to the food bowls.

She is very needy and naggy anyway but that's been worse too.

Just old age or something else?

She sounds a bit off doesn't she ? As if she's maybe a lttle sore and reluctant to walk. How is she walking (when she does), jumping and peeing/pooing?

(I'm assuming from what you say that she's still eating and drinking fine?)

Oh - and 10 arguably counts as middle aged these days. I wouldn't call that old.

I think it's the vets for you tomorrow, whenever ours have gone off their food it's been infections.

One time it was a parasite eating the red blood cells.

PS

Sorry - my own boy was being difficult and I had to go elsewhere.)

If she's got Maine Coon in her, there are a couple of genetic issues in that population which might manifest eventually. (Let me emphasize that might - she could just be having an off week.) Does she attend the vet regularly?

I agree 10 isn't really old. You say you find her asleep in funny places, it sounds like she's trying to hide herself away. Which is never a good sign.
Is her eyesight ok?when she walks does she hug the side of the wall, can she jump up and down(onto counters for example).

mayihaveaboxofchoculaits · 09/08/2013 17:53

My 12 year old moggie behaved strangely and the vet checked and diagnosed she was diabetic, so she gets insulin, but changing her diet away from cheapo tinned foods to minced meat made a huge difference. what does your cat normally eat?

cozietoesie · 10/08/2013 07:43

How is she this morning, Strange ? I'm like Fluffy and thinking vet this morning if there's no improvement.

StrangeGlue · 10/08/2013 08:28

She's eating and drinking fine. I don't really know if she's poohing normally as they go outside but she doesn't feel swollen or tender. She seems a bit better and ate this morning. She did have pooh on her foot though (oh which means she's been!) but that's because she's a bit of an untidy girl in general.

Sorry, I didn't answer all the questions. She's walking fine and her eyesight seems good. She does go to the vet regularly and seems fine at jumping. She isn't hugging the wall when she walks.

I might monitor her over the weekend and go to the vet on Monday.

Sorry, last question I missed. They have felix packets in the morning, kibble during the day and felix tins in the evening with water availible all the time.

Ah well - she sounds improved then so monitoring over the weekend might be OK. Maybe advance her next vet visit a tad if she's not completely back to normal by next week?

I meant to ask - what has the weather been like with you while she's been out of sorts ? Seniorboy (18 and still going fairly strong) has been much affected by the recent sticky heat and suffered from constipation and lassitude which he's not entirely over.

StrangeGlue · 10/08/2013 09:20

Ah that's interesting. Over the period she's been off the weather has been very changeable, hot one minutes stormy the next, and it's made me feel odd so it may have effected her too. DH is going to take her to the vet on Monday regardless of whether she's improved just to make sure it's not something underlying.

Probably a good idea if your instinct tells you she's not herself. Let us know how she gets on.

StrangeGlue · 12/08/2013 21:56

Just to update it turned out to be an ear infection hence the nagging and not coming when whistled. Got to clear her ears out and put drops in. Phew!

Not too serious then - but probably as well that you took her in and it was caught early on. Well done.
