Open vs. enclosed litter trays

I have 2 9month kittens who have open litter trays. I've moved to a smaller flat and am considering buying them one of those enclosed cat trays that kind of look like carry cases? Has anyone got any experience with these?

They are great, we would never go back to open in our house. Stop the smell wafting so much, stops the cat digging the gravel over the side and looks loads nearer

I only had an open one when I had a tiny kitten and I was worried about her getting in and out ok, litter got everywhere and she sometimes missed - it doesn't happen with an enclosed one.

they are a lot less messy the only problem I found with mine is that the kittens (10 months old) won't use it if I put the door flap on so we keep that part off.

You can remove or tape up the flap initially as well.

Enclosed is the way to go!

I always recommend this one because it has an inbuilt sieve in it, so no faffing around with poop scoops.

Having said that, my super intelligent cats couldn't work out how to use the flap, so I took it off.

Minimal smells.
It has a massive capacity, so only needs changed twice a week (for 2 cats)
I use it with Pettex Clean Paws (clumping litter), which although expensive, is brilliant and also deals with smells.

I'll buck the prevailing view and say that my boys have always preferred traditional open trays. But then I don't have the space constraints that some people have and I understand the liking for closed with some households.

I wish we could have open trays. My cats refuse to go inside them and do their business outside the trays. So we are stuck with high sides open trays

I use a closed tray with a carbon filter - small flat, huge cat, no whiff.

Catsan litter is good too.

I have exactly the same set up as Corygal (one huge boy, one new tiny kitten girl), tiny flat.

catsan is really good, and with the carbon filter, no smell even in this weather. I poop scoop every day and change every other/3 days at most and it seems fine so far.
