What's the best quality wet food?

I was chatting to my vet the other day when I took my cat for a check up and jab, and he said he doesn't particularly like Felix (her usual staple) although Sheba is quite good if a little rich (her other staple).

He said Royal Canin was good and some others which I can't remember now. What do you feed your cats? I also give her Iams dry.

Iams do pouches, but they upset my cats' stomachs. Mine have Iams dry food and Whiskas pouches, I know Whiskas aren't the best quality but they seem to be easiest on their digestion other than home-made (which mine turn their noses up at anyhow!)

My cats do have funny tummies though, it was a nightmare trying to find a diet for them that didn't give them constant diarrhoea. When they were younger I used to feed them a lot of actual meat which helped a lot, but they won't eat it anymore for some reason!

Our cat loves iams. It comes either as chunks in jelly or chunks in gravy - she wolfs both down. We buy from pet store - not seen it in the supermarket.

Mine has Royal Canin.

When he had to stay overnight at the vet's a while ago, they gave him Felix, so presumably some vets think it's okay.

In my opinion all those types of brands are as bad as each other.

The only one I buy in Supermarkets is:

Lily's Kitchen ~ which I like due to the High Meat Content and the fact that it is Organic.

From Zooplus I get:

Animonda Carny
Grau

From Happy Kitty Company:

Macs
Feringa
OmNomNom

I much prefer to raw feed though and get my raw mix from:

Natural Instinct
Honeys

I also make my own raw food but it's not as simple as giving a chunk of raw meat. You'd need to do some research or add a vitamin such as Felini Complete to the meat. I also give a raw chicken wing twice a week and get frozen chicks and mice from an online reptile supplier which my kitten really enjoys.

I don't give dry at all. I feel this is far too harsh on the kidneys of a cat which is designed to take most of the moisture it needs from it's food.

Hope that helps _

I'm feeding the bengal butchers classic, he's also had aldi £2.39 pouches with no problems and aldi tinned but not the rabbit and turkey one as it has cereals in it.

Mine ate loads on felix, 5 pouches in one day so I stopped it.

Madratlady · 19/07/2013 14:46

My cats have Hi-Life, it's got higher meat content than most of the wet foods available apart from the super expensive ones that only come in tiny tins. It's 50% meat which is much more than whisks/felix etc. They do have Go cat dry though which I know isn't the best.

riojabotherer · 19/07/2013 23:06

Mine have Animonda Carny from Zooplus but I may well put them back on Butcher's Classic as I like the convenience (and price) of being able to grab it from the supermarket. There is some really in depth info on cat nutrition online - my research lead me away from food containing grains, low meat content and added sugars.

VelvetStrider · 20/07/2013 09:38

I've been told that pouches are generally better than tins, as they have more meat and less cereal.

At the moment I'm using Purely, which is a Pets at Home own brand. They said it's similar quality to Royal Canin and the other premium brands, but not as expensive (£9 for 24 pouches iirc).

issey6cats · 20/07/2013 14:24

for reasonable price ie: similar to whiskas, then butchers classic from the supermarket is the best one , i refuse to spend twice as much money on cat food because its got a posh name, purely biscuits from pets at home are also very good my lot like them, but if i cant get over to PAH i get feline fayre from asda its £2.78 for 2kg bag, small kibble and high meat low cereal , 3 different flavours and my lot scoff it down double quick

SimLondon · 20/07/2013 21:36

Mine are on butchers classic, i'd love to know more about a raw food diet that would cost the same.

kimthomasandaimee · 20/07/2013 22:03

I would say that a raw food diet would not cost exactly the same but in terms of improved health, reduced vet bills and the fact that the cat needs to eat comparatively less of it, I think it would not end up being significantly more.

I think if you could buy in bulk and freeze in portions it could be very reasonable.

You may of course argue that there is no evidence that it is healthier however this is my belief :)

mine have a mixture of Bozita cartons (shrimp & rabbit - £2.70 per kg), Cosma tins (tuna - £4.96 per kg) & Animonda Rafiné Soupé pouches (£4.74 per kg) - all from zooplus.

they also have Royal Canin (Vet Care Nutrition) Neutered Young Female dry food

both cats very glossy & healthy Smile

(I generally buy quite a lot of food at a time to get free delivery, & re-order when stocks start getting low)
