We're getting a kitten in two weeks... We've got the chance of a puppy at the same time. I don't know if I'm nuts to say ok to it or is it better to get both at the same time. Dh really wants a dog. I'm ok as the dc are still small (7&3)

I'd say no - puppys don't have boundaries in the way that trained adult dogs do. But they do have teeth.

I think it has the potential for big trouble.

I think it depends very much on your circumstances and the types of animals that you are getting.

~ What breed of dog are you considering? Clearly a Chihuahua puppy has less potential to cause damage to the kitten than a Great Dane puppy _

~ Do you have a large enough house that you can keep them separated in the beginning and when you are not there to directly supervise them. Do you have separate areas in which to feed them? Space to keep the litter tray away from a playful puppy?

~ How old is the kitten? A thirteen week old kitten has better facilities at jumping and climbing to get out of the path of the puppy if it's annoying it than a seven week old kitten which is virtually helpless.

Having them growing up together could be potentially advantageous as they will grow to ~hopefully!~ respect and tolerate each other well.

I don't believe the puppy would just savage the kitten but if it's a big heavy puppy it of course has the capacity to cause even unintentional damage.

Also, worth considering, a sharp scratch to the puppies eye from the kitten could have bad consequences too!

Good luck with your decision :)
