I am not sure if my cat is ill or just feeling far too hot

she is twitching and running like a loon as if she is running away from something pupils are huge. She is panting mouth wide opend tongue out like a dog who is knackered. her breathing is stupidly shallow and fast.

there is water available. there are cool surfaces for her to lie on but she doesnt seem interested.

What do you think?

Has she been outside? Could she have ingested something??

ArtisanLentilWeaver · 13/07/2013 21:04

Do you have any lilies in your house or garden?

GemmaTeller · 13/07/2013 21:06

could she have been stung?

My kittencat was looking a bit wide eyed and wobbly yesterday but he's fine, he stayed in the house this afternoon when the sun was hottest.

cozietoesie · 13/07/2013 21:06

I don't like the sound of any of that. Do you have an OOH vet nearby?

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/07/2013 21:09

she is outside lots.
she eats birds and mice and frogs
no lillies that I know of here but she is very much an out door cat

SHe will let me pick her up and she cuddles and purrs but once she is down she is ok for a bit then her panting starts again.. it isn't constant btw

Can you get her to a vet ? (I appreciate that that would be a heck of a Saturday evening for you.)

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/07/2013 21:19

cozie what makes you think it is a "get to the vet issue"?

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 13/07/2013 21:26

Twitching, running like a loon, huge pupils, panting, shallow and fast breathing. I know it's hot but those don't sound like heat symptoms to me - particularly the pupil sizes. Without seeing her, I'd be wondering about toxic exposure.

Do you have an OOH vet you could call to get some oral advice on the symptoms?

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/07/2013 21:29

ooh sorry... aree you a vet?

OP posts:
cozietoesie · 13/07/2013 21:32

Nope - which is why I suggested you find one to discuss it with.

I have to say it sounds very wrong, my very furry cats are themselves completely despite the 31 degree heat.

3boys3dogshelp · 13/07/2013 21:41

Hi op please phone your vet or ooh service a cat should never mouth breathe if it is well.

Fluffycloudland77 · 13/07/2013 21:56

Vets, last time I heard of these symptoms in a cat it was poisoning from a bob martin drop on flea treatment,

NeverKnowinglyUnderstood · 13/07/2013 22:23

thanks all, she is spark out (but breathing!)
on the kitchen tiles I think perhaps she really was too hot.
But without hesitation will take her to the ooh vet tomorrow if she is not totally normal tomorrow

If you wake her is she alert? One of mine was slipping into un-consciousness and it just looked like a deep sleep.

deliasmithy · 15/07/2013 07:55

My cat pants when he over exerts himself but for cats it is ineffective at cooling them down. I've given mine some wet food in this heat and they are themselves but more lazy and moping on any cooler surface going.
