I've adopted a gorgeous little kitten

You ladies were so lovely when my poor cat was run over a year ago. Well since then I've moved to a nice flat away from traffic and a big terrace and I've just brought home a gorgeous little tortie (he's a boy - are boys torties and girls tabbies - not sure). But he's about 12 weeks, very confident and friendly, marching round the flat with his tail in the air. My daughter and I are in love!

How long should I keep him inside by the way?

Oh very cool name btw!! My new kitten is Murray (got him Sunday - tennis etc) Blush

Frizzbonce · 12/07/2013 15:26

WimpyMum - hey good thing that Murray did win or your kitten might be saddled with Djokovic!

Thank you for the advice. He knows where the litter tray is and is particularly fussy about spending A Long Time covering up.

I want to start Stan off on a good diet. My lovely old cat used to adore chicken but is Iams good? Should you feed a mix of wet and dry food and which are the ones you would recommend? I've been giving Stan Iams and Sheba cat food so far.

Oh how lovely. I have a tortoiseshell girl, she is so naughty and funny, she has a great personality.

I also have her sister who is ginger and white, and she has a lovely calm personality and is a dear little thing.

And I also have two older black cat brothers, which are huge and are like sleek panthers. It is a shame people don't like black cats - they are beautiful. Very cuddlesome and affectionate and dribble and purr when being cuddled, bless them.

That is very interesting about ginger and tortie cat genetics, dodnt know that.

I hope your kitten settles in and gives you a lot of joy.

LeGavrOrf · 12/07/2013 15:37

Stan is a great name for a cat, and isn't he beautiful. I love the mackerel coloured tabby cats.

I have uploaded a photo of my tortoiseshell cat, she is called Pickle. She is a little devil.

DiaryOfAWimpyMum · 12/07/2013 16:06

Iams is okay and if his tummy is used to that he will be fine, I give mine a mix of wet and dry, just now they seem to be liking Encore from Tesco just now and Royal Canin or Tescos own make dry food, I don't stray far from those makes as one of mine has a sensitive tummy.

I think I wold have came up with a name like Bob or something had Murray not won Grin

QuietTiger · 12/07/2013 17:43

Congratulations on the new addition. :)

Torties can occasionally be boys - I know this from first hand experience as my best friend has a tortie boy (called Bracken, he's actually complete pansy and a total big girls blouse) who was neutered by the vet at 6 months. when the vet did an examination, he was definitely male, without female reproductive organs, although he was "under developed" in the boy-part department. (IYSWIM Wink)

She says that it is actually highly amusing, as every new vet who sees Bracken insists that he is a girl, until they discover otherwise.

What a gorgeous boy and a great name. (And as suspected he's a tabby and not a tortie - Phew! No crises for him later on in life. Smile)

Sounds to me like you don't need any tips and that he's settling in fine.

Smile

LeGavrOrf Have you been practising kitten origami on Pickle?

Frizzbonce · 12/07/2013 20:27

I thought that too LeGave. Your kitten looks like a gymnastics champ!

Oh it's so lovely to have a cat around again. And Stan shows every sign of being a sociable wee thing. Smile

Stan has a certain.......proprietorial......look on his face already, if I may say?

Fluffycloudland77 · 12/07/2013 21:05

If they can see it they own it.

issey6cats · 13/07/2013 15:56

hes a tabby and georgous, torties are either big patches of red, black and white, or gingerry and black tabby, or like a blue and orange tabby which is called a dilute tortie

issey6cats · 13/07/2013 15:58

legavrorf your kitty is georgous i love the dark torties

Frizzbonce · 13/07/2013 18:45

Cozi you say 'proprietorial' - I'm now thinking 'smug little furry git'. Grin I dropped my little girl off for a sleepover earlier, came back home and no Stan. Now I'd made VERY SURE that the windows were only open a crack and we live in a flat but after an hour searching, calling and waving the treats box about I began to panic. Could he have squeezed out? I ran out to have a look - it didn't seem possible. But I ran up and down the road calling. Was in tears thinking about how was I going to explain this to my little girl?

Went back inside tried one more round of searching, calling, treat shaking. Nothing. Then just as I sat down, Stan came marching out of the kitchen tail in air, eyes blinking sleepily. Now I'd searched in EVERY POSSIBLE PLACE he could have been including the breadbin! I have no idea where he was hiding. And the fact he ignored the shaking of the treat box, something that always had my older cat running for the kitchen. Oh well I learned something today.

  1. Stan will not be bribed.
  2. He has Houdini powers - somehow.
  3. He is messing with my head (possibly)
  4. I adore him.

They find places where there aren't even places.

Grin

You sound well and truly under the paw already.

sashh · 14/07/2013 09:14

cozietoesie

It's a cartoon, you can actually adopt one and have him wander around your desktop.

For anyone who wants their own felix walking around their desktop .

LeGavrOrf · 19/07/2013 20:40

That's why I took the photo of pickle, with her legs all houdini like Grin. She is a real character.

It is embarassing how much I dote on my cats. I am going to be a mad cat lady when I am older (good).

Stan is such a cool name for a cat. I have a friend with cats called Kevin and Dave, I love those names for two bruiser ginger toms Grin

portraitoftheartist · 20/07/2013 20:09

Current thinking says don't let a kitten out until neutered and at least 6 months old. Too many young cats get run over or lost.

Poledra · 22/07/2013 15:56

Oooh, LeGav (makes you sound like a French tosser Grin) where you been? I haven't seen you around for aaages.

I got some kitties now - but went for adults as I cannot be doing with kittens - get enough stupidity off the DCs without adding kittens.

Sorry for the hijack Frizzbonce - I'm also wondering about how long to keep my boys inside for, as it's roasting hot and they're clearly gagging to get back outdoors but we've only had them for 4 days.

ratbagcatbag · 22/07/2013 16:06

I want a kitten, my tortie would eat them, me or leave home. She's not quite forgiven us for dd who's now 18 weeks old.

Don't forget pet insurance. :)

claraschu · 22/07/2013 16:09

I tried to keep my kittens in until they were older (maybe 5 months), but I am a helicopter cat-mum. They are a bit irresponsible at 12 weeks and get into so much trouble.

GerundTheBehemoth · 24/07/2013 14:10

He's a beautiful boy, love the name too :)
