Poor Rupert, attacked by 2 Dobermans

My poor 18 year old cat was attacked this morning by 2 large dogs. He was in our front garden and they attacked him. Their owner couldn't hold them or control them in any way.

I ran out and saved him. He was pinned to the ground.

He is completely traumatised, he cannot weight bear down one side and therefore cannot walk. The vet says its probably nerve damage.

He may not survive. He is dosed up on painkillers and is resting. But if he does survive it could take up to 6 weeks for his nerves to renew (or they may not).

Bless him, he was so fit for his age, eats like a horse, I'm really sad that his has happened. Even when he was in my arms the dogs were all round me barking and snarling.

The owner says she will pay for any vets bills. But I haven't contacted her yet and I don't know where I stand legally on this.

All In all. Not a good day.

Oh no, how awful. Poor rupert and poor you.

Hope the owner was suitably horrified. Worth reporting to police, I think. If they've done this once they might have a taste for it and it could be a child next Hmm

Good luck to your old fella - hope he recovers xx

How traumatic for you both. Exactly the same thing happened to me two years ago. Thankfully (and thanks to all the neighbours who came out to help) the cat survived.

If the dogs weren't on a lead then yes, you should report it.

Let's hope he makes a full recovery.

cozietoesie · 06/07/2013 11:17

Oh yes - report it directly. Bad enough that it was poor Rupert but the police will be concerned that it could have been a child. In their own garden.

If Rupert makes it (fingers crossed for him as he's an older chap) will he be able to stay inside from now on?

uggmum · 06/07/2013 12:02

The dogs were on a lead but she couldn't hold them. She had them on short leads but she was only small and they were so strong.

Bless him he is just lying down at the moment. He doesn't go out much. He's a bit slower these days and was just lying in the sun.

The dc are traumatised too.

Poor Rupert Sad

Sending good vibes x

Poor Rupert.

ugg - report them directly. If Rupert had been a 3 year old kid and not a cat, she's be down at the police station being interviewed right now and the dogs would likely have already been put down. You do not take large, badly trained, dogs out for a walk unless they're controllable on a lead and - with that sort of breed - probably wearing muzzles.

Thanks everybody. I appreciate all your comments.

So sorry to hear what's happened. I believe dog owners are liable for damage and harm caused by their dogs hence the need for insurance whereas cat owners are not.

RightsaidFreud · 07/07/2013 15:04

Poor Rupert, I hope he makes a swift recovery, poor little kitty. Please keep us updated on his recovery.

uggmum · 07/07/2013 21:34

Just a quick update, Rupert keeps trying to get up but is really struggling. I placed some cat food 2 feet from him and he stumbled over and did eat it.

But when he moves he becomes distressed. He did wee on the blanket he was lying on and I was worried that he couldn't control his bladder. I took him outside and placed him on an area in the garden where he likes to wee and he did it so I'm hopeful that he can control this.

I haven't contacted the dog owner yet. (it's dd's birthday so we've been a bit busy). But I'll call her tomorrow.

Poor Rupert :(

I hope the dog owner sticks to her word and pays the vet bills.
