Advice on my cat who is still feeding her kittens

I've always had amazing advice on here about my cat and her kittens.

I'm not totally clued up on kittens as I didn't expect my cat to become pregnant due to being told when I got her that she was neutered.

Anyway, my next worry is about the mum cat, her body didn't cope very well with feeding so my vet advised me to wean the kittens a wee bit earlier, which I did and they all now eat and drink 'normal' kitten stuff.

However they are STILL going to their mum for a feed and I'm noticing mum cat is very quiet nowadays, lies in the middle of floors sleeping etc.
The kittens are 11 weeks old now and will all be rehomed by the 22nd so Im hoping my cat will be able to build herself up again when her feeding is done.

My query is just that is it normal for my cat to just lie about in random places? How can I tell if her body isn't coping? She had enlarged veins before which my vet told me was a sign she was having trouble feeding. They are all back to normal now but she just seems 'tired' constantly!

Is this a long time for kittens to be feeding from mum - especially since they are all weaned?
I'm keeping one of the kittens, will she stop feeding from her mum voluntarily?

Sorry if I sound as if I'm worrying over nothing and being a 'neurotic mother'

Sorry also that this has ended up so long.
Thank you in advance for any advice. Xx

If they are still feeding from Mum they are not fully weaned the only way to do this is to separate them - whilst the milk bar is still open they will still feed! Can any of the kittens go sooner?
Mummy sounds poorly maybe running a temperature perhaps mastitis all the lying around is really not normal so I would suggest a trip to the vet.

Thanks for that reply. One of the kittens is going tomorrow and another the following Saturday.

Do you think I should separate my cat from her kittens now? How long would it take for the mums milk to dry up?

I'll phone the vet on Monday morning and book my cat in.

Thank you so much for the advice. X

My cat fed her kittens until 12-13 weeks - we kept 2. But she had no other health problems.

Pets t home vets are open weekends, I've used them and had no problems with them.

Um, one of mine lies about in random places... she sleeps in the middle of the living room floor, on the stairs, the kitchen table, there's a shelf on a unit that she's quite partial to and I've caught her sleeping in my plate cupboard, if you leave a carrier bag anywhere that's quite clearly her new bed - oh once in a visitor's handbag, rofl.

So it might not be a sign of anything, well possibly a mental imbalance, lol. (mine definitely is odd)

I think the big warning signs for me is your vet has already warned you that she's struggling and she is constantly tired I would find a vet today most are open on Saturday. Yes I would separate all the kittens now - at this pony they are just being little parasites.

Oh - and make arrangements with your normal vet to have her neutered just as soon as she's healthy enough. Leaving aside the issue of unwanted kittens, it doesn't sound as if she's personally up to having any more litters.

tabulahrasa · 06/07/2013 11:13

Oh don't get me wrong, I'd take her to the vets for a check up if she's subdued...I'd always rather take a healthy pet to see the vet than potentially miss something important.

I just meant sleeping in the middle of the floor by itself isn't necessarily worrying.
