Advice please: possible need to temporarily rehome cats

Hello everyone, I am looking for some advice, in a nutshell we are moving to a new area to get within catchment for my daughter to start school. We cannot afford to buy the houses in catchment so we will need to rent. There are 3 outstanding schools in the area so it is in a lot of demand.

I had planned to get an unfurnished property and to offer more for a deposit to compensate for having the cats if the landlord was funny about it. However, I have contacted agents about a number of properties and have had the same response from all of them along the lines of 'yes we can ask the landlord if they would consider cats but there are around 8 other people looking to view this property, so I doubt they are going to accept the people with cats'...

I am getting a bit panicky that we are not going to find anywhere but I really don't want to lose my lovely cats!! I had a possible plan, which is not in any way ideal, that perhaps I could find a shelter to take them in temporarily, and obviously make lots of donations to that shelter, get into a property and then work on the landlord to accept cats, and if they won't budge we will have a bit more time to find somewhere that will, or possibly get lucky and a house will come up for sale in budget in the catchment area, failing all else, we just sneak the cats back in!! Obviously if it looked like it was not going to work and some really amazing homes came up for the cats we would have to let them go rather than sit in a shelter, as this wouldn't be fair on them, but I would really be hoping to get them back.

Sorry this is a bit long winded, I am just feeling a bit stressed about it all! If anyone has been in a similar position and can advise, or knows anything about temporarily rehoming cats then I would be very grateful for any wise words!

Shelters are so, so overcrowded that I doubt any would act as a temporary kennel for you. I would be inclined to advise renting a house without mentioning the cats and then just moving them in. If you are good tenants the landlord is unlikely to want to evict you because of it, and if he or she should want to evict you, then the eviction process takes approximately 8 months (I know, I'm a Landlord and I've just done it).

Your only other option is to pay for private kenneling

Don't panic! Just lie, and tell them that you don't have any pets.

Two rented houses back onto our garden. Every time these houses are vacated the advert says "no pets, no smoking, no DSS." Everyone who moves in ticks every single one of those boxes but no one ever bothers to check.

Cats are the very last problem that most landlords would worry about, so don't even mention yours and good luck with your move.

I obviously mean cattery not kennels! duh ...

This was my inital thought when I knew we were moving, but I asked on a forum and lots of landlords came back saying cats wouldn't be a problem just offer a higher deposit, it's better to be honest. However, that doesn't work when there is such a lot of competition. My DH is not keen on lying but I think we are going to be left with no option.

Thanks!
