If you have 2 cats, how many litter trays do you have

My 2 kittens came litter trays, no accidents for the first couple of weeks but I've now started finding wee on clean washing waiting to be put away and the bottoms of curtains where they touch the floor

Never in the same place twice

I'm wondering if one of them is a clean freak?

They do poo in the litter tray and wee sometimes but not consistently

I remove poo as soon as I see it and fully empty and wash it twice a week

I'm planning on changing the type of litter to wood pellets but I'm currently using the same type as they were trained on

Would a second tray make a difference? One each? And should I wait until they are consistent before starting to change?

When the Lodger was here, I had 3. Now, Seniorboy has two to himself and uses both. It's said - 'One tray per cat plus one' but I grant you that that's not always practical. Nonetheless, one tray between two is seriously pushing it.

Get another one tray at least. I'd see how things go on those before changing the litter type - and when you do, best to change it gradually rather than wholesale overnight.

PS - you should ideally remove pee clumps as soon as you see them as well. What kind of litter so you currently use?

cozietoesie · 29/06/2013 21:31

do you......?

yegodsandlittlefishes · 29/06/2013 21:32

I had 2 really large covered litter trays for 2 cats, and they both used one for poo and the other for wee. We don't need litter trays any more, as now we have a cat flap but keep them in case we take the cats on holiday with us.

I have two cats and one litter tray, but they do have access to the outside too.

justabigdisco · 29/06/2013 21:35

One

chickensaladagain · 29/06/2013 21:35

It's a non clumping cat litter so we clumps no

My last cat used the wooden pellets and I did then as it was obvious when they had been

Ah right. That's the stuff where the pee just goes down to the bottom and forms a little lake/sludge underneath ? I wouldn't go there if I was a cat and it had been used before - they'll smell it.

The advantage of a clumping litter is that you can take out the pee clumps so it's more attractive to use and also that, because of that, you don't need to completely replace and wash it twice a week as you do.

My cats (2 of them) go outside now but when they were younger I started off with one litter tray and then when they got to about 4 months one kitten (don't know which one)started weeing and pooing everywhere, I suspect the other kitten was getting territorial over the litter tray.

We bought another one and it stopped (the weeing and pooing everywhere!)

simpson · 29/06/2013 21:50

Another tray obviously, not another kitten Grin

cozietoesie · 29/06/2013 21:53

It could be territoriality, true - but sometimes you do get clean freaks who don't like to use a tray that someone else has already used/ they themselves have already used for a different function etc etc.

Having another tray reduces the potential frequency of those problems as much as anything else.

I have 3 cats but they all go outside. Recently we have had a tom cat coming in and eating their food and much worse spraying so we shut the cat flap at night for a while and the 3 of them used the same litter. I hated the cat litter just because I am not used to it so now I just take their food away at night and cat has nothing to come in for.

ZebraOwl · 29/06/2013 22:05

My two are still perfectly happy sharing the one (large, open) litter tray - to the point they will share it in the most literal fashion, one at either end or side by side! If there was the tiniest hint of the arrangement not working for them I'd find some way to manage a second tray, but as they're completely happy it seems daft to add work, mess, cost & hassle for myself!

FunnysInLaJardin · 29/06/2013 22:06

none, they go outside

cozietoesie · 29/06/2013 22:16

happyreindeer

Replace you current catflap with a microchip flap. It will read your cats' chips and only allow them in - and not the mean tom.

It's a bit more expensive but well worth it for peace of mind.

I have two cats and two trays. They are happy sharing both and tend to use one for pee and one for poo. I know the recommendation is one per cat plus one but two is working well for us.

cozietoesie · 29/06/2013 22:30

I think you need to be realistic lurked and if it works - well fine. (I'd hate to think of how many trays thecatneuterer would have to have if she followed that other dictum!)

fengirl1 · 29/06/2013 22:35

I have also found that if a cat has pooed in a tray, they don't like to use it to wee, but will happily wee in a tray they have pooed in.....

cozietoesie · 29/06/2013 22:41

Unless you're Seniorboy! Grin

deliasmithy · 30/06/2013 18:44

I have 3 indoor cats and 3 trays.
The trays are definitely weighted towards either pee or poo but not exclusively.

I use clumping, it smells less, uses less litter and is quick to identify and remove all pee/poo.

Spraying of wee can be territorial behaviour mainly in toms.

Lonecatwithkitten · 30/06/2013 20:23

Where you have a problem which you do as they are peeing out of the litter tray you should up grade all facilities litter trays, water bowls and food bowls to one per cat plus one spare. This reduces any potential conflict.

cozietoesie · 30/06/2013 20:37

I've always regarded peeing out of the tray (apart from male spraying) as a sign that they're unhappy about something because that's pretty well the only method of protest they have - and it's up to the people to work out what they're unhappy about and improve things where possible. Food, trays, water, other cats, whatever.

So that makes sense.

DramaAlpaca · 30/06/2013 20:44

Two cats, no litter trays. They take themselves off outside through the cat flap.

We had a litter tray until our kittens got to around 6 months old. Then we noticed that the tray wasn't being used because they preferred to go outside so we got rid of it.

cozietoesie · 30/06/2013 20:48

I'd keep one around, though. Your situation could change almost overnight - a new mean big tom on the block, an influx of foxes, a neighbour who finally gets fed up with dealing with your cats' poo, illness etc etc.

chickensaladagain · 30/06/2013 21:05

2nd litter tray in place, no accidents today -touch wood
