When can he go outside

Our lovely ginger tom kitten is 13 weeks old. He gets his second booster shot today and so I am assuming he can go out? We are getting a cat flap put in and will wait a week or so until that is done, which should bring him up to 14 weeks, is he old enough for the outside world?

He is mega bored inside even though he has cat toys nd an expensive cat tree. He has twice climbed to the top of the curtain rail. (We helped him down, would he get down by himself?) Any advice welcomed, please.

the vet seemed to think he was a bit feral, but the vet nurse said her kitten was just the same.

He has calmed down on the biting and scratching, thankfully, but I know he is bored and wants to go out as every time we open a door he is off into the next room, e.g. into the garage and covered in cobwebs, into the porch etc. Luckily we have lots of internal doors so he has some sense of freedom but not been outside yet.

I am also scared he will booger off if! How do we know he will come back? He is addicted to Dreamies so I will just stand there and shake the packet until he comes......

Thanks so much.

13 weeks would be a bit young for me, Italiangreyhound. He may be about to have his second shots but it's a big rough old world out there and there are a lot of pitfalls for a little 'un even without disease.

Do you play with him to help his boredom?

PS - I'd help him down from the curtain rail as well - it's a bit like climbing trees and the angle of claws etc. Apart from anything else it saves accidents if he falls - and certainly protects the state of your curtains.

My kitten is now 11 weeks and has her next jabs on Wed. DH wants her to go out as she's also desperate for the outdoor life and trying to make a run for it when we open the door! I'll be pushing for her to be indoors for at least another month or two and close to neutering age as am worried about her getting stuck somewhere or worse..

It's certainly hard work keeping them entertained though isn't it!!

I kept my current kittens in until over 5 months old. I've lost a previous cat years ago at 5 months and the weather was shit in the early winter anyway so just kept them in. Their mum I kept in for a shorter length of time but she was already an adult and had kittens to come home for.

I forgot to add that we also were waiting until both had been for the snip, we didn't want any kitty surprises!

We're going to keep ours in until they've been neutered. They've started having supervised access to the garden this evening and I must say they are in their element. Too little to be out by themselves just yet, in my view.

I'd say he's a bit little yet. My friend saw a seagull fly off with a kitten and kill it Hmm
I kept my little one in till 6mths after a few fights with his brother he was tough enough.

Oh no Shock that's awful

Did you get a cat harness to keep kitten supervised rioja? Just wondering how easy it is to keep them in confines of the garden to get used to the outdoors gradually.

riojabotherer · 26/06/2013 23:17

We haven't got harnesses for them, but we have a very secure, smallish garden. After a while I felt confident enough to leave them to their own devices, checking on them often. They ran in periodically as if to check 'indoors' was still there. Sleeping very well now!

Italiangreyhound · 27/06/2013 01:34

We tried a cat harness but he did not like it.

The vet said he would be OK to go out next week. Our garden is secure but he could get over the wall if he wanted to.

I am worried about him but also worried he will hurt himself if left in doors.

I do play with him and so does DD and we are arranging for guests to meet him and they all like to play.

He is just bored. I just rescued him from the top of the curtain rail! that is the third time.

Think we will try supervised visits to the garden but if he runs off, what do I do!

How do they know there way back!!
